Sakura Wars (Sakura Taisen) is a Japanese steampunk media franchise created by Oji Hiroi and owned by Sega. The series is a cross-genre video game that combines tactical role-playing, dating sim, and visual novel elements. It is set in a fictionalized version of the Taishō period (1912-1926), which is characterized by advanced steam-powered technology. The central conflict of the series is between demonic forces and groups of women with magical abilities who pilot steam-powered mecha to combat them. These groups, known as Combat Revues, operate covertly as theatrical troupes to maintain cover. The player's actions in the dating sim portions of the game directly impact the characters' performance in battle.

Later mecha designs, like the Mugen, are more sleek and combat-oriented, which some fans dislike for being different from the original Koubu designs.
