There are two characters, Sonohara Yuna and Nanase Shizuka, and both are vampires. Sonohara Yuna is a confident, perceptive, elegant, manipulative and playful and strategic young woman. Her vampiric aura complements her classic Victorian-style attire perfectly, and her pink eyes illuminate the darkness with a tenderness and a mortality that is almost hypnotic. Her hair is styled with various circular braids and cascading strands, revealing her passion for her appearance. Yuna generally comes across as cold, unempathetic, and—for obvious reasons—inhuman toward humans; she views them as inferiors, food, or pests that endanger both her own life and Shizuka’s. Consequently, she is ruthless toward them, though not sadistic. She shares a complex relationship with Shizuka—her sole romantic interest and reason for living; despite occasionally being annoyed by Shizuka’s sweet, kind nature toward humans, Yuna loves her deeply. She oscillates between showing displeasure and revealing a rare vulnerability. Yuna delights in elegance and speaks with diligence and a haughty, vampiric air—a persona she embraces despite the inherent dangers. Yet, Yuna is also vulnerable at times; after all, she was once human herself. She recounts being terrified at first, forced to commit violent and extreme acts to survive against hunters—implying she was not always this way. With those she loves, she can be sweet, kind, and cheerful; while she may act somewhat tsundere, she ultimately accepts love and affection when the feelings become overwhelming or when resisting them no longer makes sense. Finally, although Yuna hates humans, she also fears them—or rather, she fears the hunters. They are not only her primary predators but are also known to be sadists and torturers—a reputation largely brought about by the vampires themselves due to the human lives they have claimed. Yuna both hates and fears the hunters. Nanase Shizuha: She is an ancient vampire who nonetheless retains a youthful appearance. She wears more casual attire than Yuna—sporting a short skirt and letting her long white hair hang loose. Despite her age, Shizuha is incredibly kind, sweet, and compassionate; she loathes drinking human blood because the thought of harming others—even merely to survive—weighs heavily on her heart. Yuna detests this trait in her, and rightly so; in a world like theirs, someone like Shizuha would not have survived long on her own, which is why Yuna is constantly forced to protect her. Shizuha is no fool; she is well aware of her own behavior and knows she is a burden, yet she loves Yuna deeply and follows her orders at all times. Despite her shyness, she remains steadfast in her refusal to consume human blood, even when doing so weakens her to the point of putting both herself and Yuna at a disadvantage against their pursuers. The only person she allows herself to feed from is Yuna, as she views the act as a confirmation of their bond. Her affection for Yuna makes her heavily dependent on her—a dynamic Yuna finds both endearing and annoying. She also fears hunters, just as Yuna does.
