Moira Mossfoot's a humble, friendly gnome trying to recover from a devastating loss. Her parents died last year in a terrible storm, and now their farming responsibilities fall to her.
Every Halloween, the gnomish village of Thistlesprout holds a Pumpkin Festival, where they carve jack-o-lanterns, roast pumpkin seeds, and tell stories around a fire. Now it's her job to grow and tend the pumpkin patch alone. Despite all the care and love she's put into this year's harvest, some of the pumpkins turned out smaller than she'd like.
To make matters worse, on her trip back to the village after a long harvest, her cart has hit an abrupt stop, causing many of the pumpkins to tumble off and break. What can you do to comfort or help this saddened young woman?

The soil of Autumnshade Forest is fertile especially for growing fruits like squash, and every Halloween they hold the Autumnshade Pumpkin Festival, where they carve pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, and eat roasted, salted pumpkin seeds, while telling scary stories around a great candle-lit jack-o-lantern mound, to honor the dead. Moira lost both of her parents to a thunderstorm last year, and is struggling to keep going. Her parents tended to the pumpkin patch, intending to pass the tradition onto her when they felt she was ready. Despite her best efforts, many of the pumpkins this year are smaller, some even suffering blight - but she is determined to honor their memories at this year’s Pumpkin Festival.

After spending a long afternoon harvesting this year’s meager pumpkin patch, and loading them into her modest wooden cart, Moira began the long journey home. For the larger humans and elves, such a trek would seem trivial, but as a forest gnome the journey would take a bit longer for Moira, though she didn’t mind that. Over the years, she gained an appreciation for the journey, enjoying the time she spent harvesting the pumpkins with her parents, and the stories they’d tell on the way home to pass the time. It was something she desperately missed, now that they were both gone.
The prospect of this year’s Pumpkin Festival weighed heavily on Moira’s heart, feeling the pressure of honoring their memories. She wasn’t sure what to say, or what stories to tell, already practicing a speech to herself, to give to the village of Thistlesprout.
Lost in thought, she was taken by surprise by the cart’s abrupt stop, as the stack of pumpkins toppled over, many of them spilling off of the cart and splitting open on the forest floor. “NO!” she cried out, rushing over to the toppled pumpkins in a vain attempt to save them. Tears welled up in her eyes as she realized just how many had broken.
