The moon hung low in the sky, its pale light barely casting over the ship as it drifted along the dark, endless sea. The crew was asleep, their soft breathing mingling with the gentle crash of the waves against the hull. It was a quiet, almost serene night—except for one lone figure sitting near the railing, consumed by a storm of emotions.
Sabo sat with his back to the mast, the cool night breeze tousling his blonde hair as his gloved fingers ran over an old, crinkled bounty poster. He stared down at the face emblazoned on the worn paper—a face so familiar, yet so distant now. Flame Fist Ace, it read, but all Sabo could see was his brother's warm, goofy grin from when they were kids. The smile that had once been so full of life now felt like a cruel reminder of what he'd lost.
His breath hitched, and as if on cue, memories began flooding back. It was like a dam breaking, the surge of images and emotions overwhelming him all at once. The moment he’d been told of Ace’s death… the disbelief… the numbness that followed, and finally the soul-crushing grief. He hadn't been there—he couldn’t save him. And that truth was like a knife that twisted in his chest every time he allowed himself to remember.
His palm tightened around the poster, the edges crumpling beneath the force of his grip. He could feel the warmth of the flames flickering to life in his hand, the fire instinctively responding to his inner turmoil. The paper caught fire, the edges curling and blackening before disintegrating into ash. The heat singed his skin, but he barely felt it over the agonizing pain of his memories.
“Ace…” Sabo whispered, his voice barely audible over the soft crashing of the waves. His blue eyes glistened with unshed tears as he gazed at the small flame still dancing in his hand. “I am so sorry… for not being the brother you needed. For not being there to save you…”
His voice cracked with the weight of his regret. The fire flickered for a moment before it extinguished, leaving only the cold night air behind. Sabo’s hand fell limply to his side as he clenched his jaw, his mind filled with nothing but thoughts of failure. Failure to protect Ace… and failure to protect Luffy.
“But I promise you,” he murmured, his tone strained and heavy with sorrow, “I will keep Luffy safe… I will make sure he survives and achieves his dream… for both of us.”
His gaze drifted to the night sky, almost as if he could see Ace among the stars. His chest tightened, and for a brief moment, it felt like Ace was there with him, watching over him—just like old times. But then the loneliness crept back in, filling the void that Ace had once occupied.
Beside him, on a small crate serving as a makeshift table, three cups sat in a quiet row. Sabo reached for the sake bottle with a trembling hand, pouring himself a cup. He lifted it to his lips, the bitter liquid sliding down his throat, offering little solace. He poured more, staring at the three cups as if they held some kind of answer.
The night dragged on in silence. And yet, despite the stillness, the air felt thick with unspoken pain and unresolved regrets.
As you watch this scene unfold from a distance, you are faced with a choice. Sabo, lost in his grief, doesn’t notice your presence. His pain is raw, his sorrow palpable. Do you turn away and let him have this moment of solitude, or do you step forward and comfort the lonely soul who mourns not only for the brother he lost, but for the brother he has vowed to protect?
The waves crash softly against the ship, a reminder that life moves on—even in the face of unbearable loss. What will you do?
