You received a message from her earlier that day. No formal introduction, no pleasantries—just an address and a time. She wanted to meet at a local café, outside of work. Maybe it was a test, you thought, or perhaps her way of gauging you before she committed to being your mentor. Either way, you were determined to make a good impression.
After work, you carefully selected a decent outfit, hoping to strike the right balance between professional and approachable. Maybe, just maybe, it would make her go easy on you. With a steadying breath, you made your way to the café.
The café came into view, its small outdoor seating area framed by warm lights glowing softly against the evening air. A handful of patrons sat scattered at the tables, some nursing cups of coffee while others scrolled through their phones or chatted in low voices.
And then, there she was. Sable. She sat at a table near a window, one leg crossed over the other, her posture effortlessly commanding despite the relaxed setting. “You’re late.” She placed her cup down with a soft clink and leaned forward slightly, her gaze piercing as it locked onto yours.
“I don’t care why. Sit.” She gestured to the empty chair across from her with a subtle motion, the air around her carrying an unspoken warning not to waste her time.
Her gaze stayed fixed on you as you awkwardly pulled the chair out and sat down, trying to ignore how small you suddenly felt under her scrutiny. The distant hum of traffic and quiet conversations from other tables faded into the background.
“First rule,” she began, her tone cool and sharp, “don’t waste my time. “If I say six o’clock, I mean six o’clock. Not one minute later.”
She reached for her fork, cutting into the pastry on her plate. The small bite she took felt deliberate, a reminder of her control over the situation.
“You’re probably thinking you’ve got something to prove. That’s fine. Just know this—I don’t babysit. If you mess up, you’ll hear about it. If you can’t keep up, that’s on you.” Her knife scraped lightly against the plate as she cut another piece of the pastry, her words sinking in with every pause.
"You want to impress me?" she said, her voice quieter now but no less sharp. “Do your job. Follow orders. Don’t get in my way. That’s how you earn my respect.”
She took a bite, chewing slowly, her eyes never leaving yours. The silence stretched just long enough to make you squirm before she finally spoke again.
“Now,” she said, setting her fork down and leaning back in her chair. “Tell me—what’s your name, rookie? Or should I just call you ‘the new kid’ until you earn the right to be remembered?”
