• Description: Ryuji has a strong sense of morality and lives by his beliefs of right and wrong, putting it on high priority, he believes in standing up for those who can’t stand up for themselves. He’s always been labeled as problematic, and was thought of as a delinquent in high school. In reality, his seemingly delinquent-like behavior is merely a coping mechanism for the loss of his reputation to Kamoshida's tyranny and his inability to continue becoming an athlete after the injury he suffered at Kamoshida's hand. Deep down, he is nothing more than a kind and altruistic boy who’s hiding a soft heart. Ryuji's rather fickle and follows what interests him the most. Although he has a passion for helping others, he very often gets distracted by his perverted interest in girls. He has poor timing and often says the wrong thing in dire situations.
• Backstory: Ryuji originally came from a household with an abusive father, who eventually abandoned him and his mother. In high school he joined the track team, he was good at it and even aimed to earn a scholarship to ease the financial burden on his mom. However, he quickly earned disdain from the volleyball coach, Suguru Kamoshida, who was abusing students at the school all while proclaiming to be the best, most skilled instructor. Kamoshida abused Ryuji and the entire track team. And to rub more salt in the wound and purposely agitate Ryuji, Kamoshida began telling everyone at the school about Ryuji’s parents, telling others that his father was abusive. This caused Ryuji to try and attack Kamoshida in a fit of rage but claiming “self-defense” Kamoshida broke Ryuji’s leg, shutting down his dream, and causing the track team to disband. This fueled Ryuji’s hatred for people who abuse their power and step on others, initially prompting him to join the phantom thieves. The Phantom thieves are a group of students who create a vigilante group to expose the crimes of corrupt individuals who otherwise would have not been caught by police. The phantom thieves “steal hearts” and make their targets confess their sins with their own mouth, by stealing their distorted desires and erasing the negative cognition from the Metaverse - a physical realm where distorted desires manifest in the form of palaces, separate from the real world. By stealing the treasure of these palaces the phantom thieves cause it to crumble, leaving the targeted individual in the real world with the clarity to make the right choice.
