Shibuya was a city of contradictions.
During the day, it was almost impossible to imagine the darker world hidden beneath its surface. The streets were crowded with tourists, university students, office workers, and groups of friends wandering between department stores, restaurants, arcades, and brightly lit cafés. Everything seemed loud, ordinary, and harmless.
But Shibuya changed after midnight.
The crowds became thinner. The bright streets gradually emptied, and the people who remained were often there for reasons that had little to do with shopping or entertainment.
Back alleys became meeting points for illegal deals. Stolen goods were exchanged behind closed doors. Underground clubs operated without asking questions, and fights between rival groups were common enough that most locals had learned not to interfere.
The police knew there were organizations controlling parts of this underground world.
The problem was proving anything.
One of the most infamous groups was known as "Poisons."
Poisons was not a traditional gang with a single founder or a rigid hierarchy. It was divided into several groups, each operating under its own members and leaders. What united them was the system they had built around their animal masks.
Every member wore one.
Every mask carried a meaning.
Some represented intelligence. Others represented loyalty, brutality, ambition, patience, or deception.
Ryomen Sukuna wore a wolf.
The wolf represented independence, dominance, and the ability to survive alone while still commanding the respect of those who chose to follow.
Sukuna was not officially the sole leader of Poisons.
He didn't need to be.
He was one of the most respected and feared members, and his influence extended far beyond his own squad. When he spoke, people listened. When he entered a room, conversations tended to become quieter.
His authority came less from a formal position and more from the reputation he had built.
He was intelligent, ruthless, impatient with incompetence, and almost impossible to intimidate.
His uniform was simple: a fitted black short-sleeved shirt, loose black cargo trousers, and a heavy belt carrying several concealed weapons. The wolf mask covered his face whenever he was working.
It had become almost synonymous with him.
Almost nobody knew what he looked like beneath it.
She did not know either.
Not at first.
Their first encounter had been entirely accidental.
She had been leaving university one evening when several men attempted to corner her on her way home. She fought back rather than surrendering immediately, managing to land several blows despite being outnumbered.
But exhaustion eventually caught up with her.
There were too many of them.
Her movements became slower, her breathing heavier, and for one brief moment, she genuinely thought she might not be able to keep standing.
Then Sukuna appeared.
He didn't ask whether she wanted help.
He didn't make a dramatic entrance.
He simply stepped between her and the men.
What followed was quick and brutal.
When it was over, Sukuna barely looked at the people lying on the ground.
His attention went directly to her.
Not with tenderness.
With assessment.
He looked her over as though determining whether she was injured.
"You're reckless."
She had expected concern.
Instead, she received criticism.
"You were surrounded. What exactly did you think you were going to accomplish?"
It was such an absurdly cold thing to say after intervening that she almost laughed.
But Sukuna remembered her.
Perhaps because she had fought back.
Perhaps because she hadn't immediately started crying or thanking him.
Perhaps because, despite being frightened, she had still looked directly at him.
Whatever the reason, their paths continued to cross.
At first, it seemed coincidental.
Eventually, it became obvious that Sukuna was choosing to cross them.
He began appearing at her apartment late at night.
Sometimes he knocked.
Other times, he climbed onto the balcony as if the window were a perfectly reasonable alternative to using the front door.
He never offered an explanation.
He simply appeared.
And, strangely enough, he stayed.
Their conversations were rarely serious.
They talked about university, people they disliked, insignificant things that had happened during the day, and occasionally nothing at all.
Sukuna never volunteered information about Poisons.
Whenever she asked questions that came too close to his work, he either changed the subject or gave her an answer vague enough to end the conversation.
It wasn't because he was incapable of talking about himself.
He simply didn't like giving people information they hadn't earned.
Yet with her, he gave more than he gave most people.
His presence itself was already a form of trust.
He kept returning.
That was the part Sukuna would never have admitted mattered.
He could have spent his nights anywhere.
He could have been surrounded by people who feared him, respected him, or wanted something from him.
Instead, he repeatedly chose to climb onto her balcony.
They were never officially together.
There had never been a conversation defining their relationship.
No promises.
No labels.
No declarations.
There was simply an understanding between them.
Something existed.
Something neither of them named.
Sometimes, when Sukuna was leaving, he would pull his wolf mask back over his face, lean toward her, and press a brief kiss against her lips before disappearing into the night.
It was never overly affectionate.
Never sentimental.
Almost deliberately restrained.
That restraint was very Sukuna.
He could tolerate physical closeness.
Emotional definition was another matter.
Calling her his girlfriend would mean acknowledging that she occupied a place in his life.
And Sukuna did not like giving people places in his life.
Attachment meant responsibility.
Responsibility meant vulnerability.
And vulnerability was precisely what he spent most of his life avoiding.
Mahito noticed before anyone else.
Known around Poisons by the rabbit mask he wore, Mahito had an irritating talent for noticing things that other people preferred to leave alone.
"You know, for someone who supposedly doesn't care, you spend an awful lot of time visiting that girl."
Sukuna's expression immediately darkened.
"Keep talking."
Mahito grinned.
"Or what?"
"I'll throw you off the building."
Mahito only laughed.
"So she does exist."
"I never said she didn't."
"You didn't have to."
Sukuna's eyes narrowed.
Mahito had touched a subject Sukuna disliked for a very specific reason.
He wasn't embarrassed about being interested in someone.
Embarrassment would have required caring about other people's opinions.
What irritated him was something else.
Mahito had correctly identified something Sukuna himself refused to define.
And Sukuna hated having his own feelings put into words before he was ready to acknowledge them.
Still, the nights continued.
For a while, everything remained strangely peaceful.
Until one night.
She was already inside her apartment when she heard something hit the balcony railing.
At first, she thought it was the wind.
Then she heard it again.
She turned toward the window.
Her breath caught.
Sukuna was standing on the other side of the glass.
Something about him was immediately wrong.
His posture was unusually rigid, his breathing uneven, and one hand was pressed firmly against his abdomen.
She rushed to the window and unlocked it.
"Sukuna?"
He stepped inside.
He didn't answer.
Blood had soaked through the black fabric beneath his hand.
For a moment, he simply stood there.
He was clearly injured, but his expression remained almost infuriatingly composed.
That was another characteristic of Sukuna.
He hated appearing weak.
Even now, when his body was forcing him to acknowledge its limits, his first instinct was not to show fear.
It was to maintain control.
He had spent years building a reputation around being the person who never needed anyone.
And yet he had come here.
That contradiction mattered.
"What happened?"
His jaw tightened.
"A job went wrong."
His voice was low and irritated.
"Mahito's plan."
She moved closer.
"And your stomach?"
"Police officer got lucky."
His tone was almost dismissive.
"Took a shot before I could move."
He sounded more annoyed than frightened.
That was probably the truth.
Sukuna's anger was easier for him to process than his vulnerability.
Being injured meant that someone else had temporarily managed to overpower him.
The pain was unpleasant.
The loss of control was worse.
She reached toward him, but he immediately caught her wrist.
His grip wasn't violent, but it was firm.
"Don't fuss over me."
She stared at him.
"You came here bleeding."
Silence.
His eyes narrowed.
For several seconds, neither of them moved.
Then his grip loosened.
That small gesture said more than an apology could have.
He was allowing her to help.
Not because he suddenly became comfortable with vulnerability.
Because, somewhere beneath his pride, he trusted her enough to tolerate it.
He took another step.
His balance faltered.
His hand caught her shoulder.
This time, he didn't immediately pull away.
"Help me."
The words were quiet.
Almost reluctant.
Not a plea.
Sukuna would probably rather die than make it sound like one.
It was still a request.
And that alone was unusual.
The wolf mask slipped from his face.
It hit the floor with a dull sound.
She froze.
For the first time since meeting him, she could finally see the person behind the mask.
His face was sharper than she had imagined.
Distinctive markings crossed his features, framing his eyes and making his expression appear even more severe. His nose was defined, his cheekbones pronounced, and his features carried the same intimidating quality as the personality she had already learned to recognize.
But his eyes were what immediately caught her attention.
Deep red.
Focused.
Still carrying that familiar arrogance despite the exhaustion.
He noticed her staring.
Of course he did.
"What?"
She remained silent.
She had seen the wolf mask so many times that it had almost become his face.
Now, without it, Sukuna suddenly seemed strangely human.
And perhaps that was what made the moment so intimate.
Not the blood.
Not the injury.
Not even the fact that he had allowed her to help him.
It was the fact that he had allowed her to see something he deliberately kept hidden from everyone else.
His face.
His weakness.
His need for help.
Three things Sukuna would normally never surrender willingly.
He noticed the realization in her expression.
"Don't make that face."
His voice was quieter now.
"I'm not dying."
It wasn't reassurance in the conventional sense.
It was Sukuna's version of it.
He didn't tell her not to worry.
He didn't admit that he had been afraid.
He simply refused to let her see him as helpless.
Yet he still hadn't moved away from her.
For once, Sukuna was not standing in front of her as the untouchable figure everyone in Shibuya feared.
He wasn't the man behind the wolf mask.
He wasn't the person everyone obeyed.
He was simply Ryomen Sukuna.
Injured, exhausted, irritated, and forced to confront something he hated far more than pain.
He had needed someone.
And, out of everyone he could have gone to, he had chosen her.
