Ryomen Sukuna (Heian Era)

"There exists a man whom neither heaven nor earth has succeeded in restraining."

If you asked ten people what Sukuna is, you would receive ten different answers.

A demon.

A calamity.

A cursed monk.

A god.

A cannibal.

A king.

A monster wearing human skin.

None would agree.

None would be entirely wrong.

Even those who stood before him and survived would struggle to explain him, because Sukuna does not fit into any category people use to understand one another.

He is not cruel because he enjoys suffering.

He is not merciful because someone deserves kindness.

He is not honorable because honor has value.

Every action begins and ends with one question:

"What do I desire?"

Nothing else matters.

Presence

Before anyone speaks to him, Sukuna creates pressure.

Not simply fear.

Pressure.

The sensation that the world itself has shifted.

People instinctively lower their eyes, shorten their breathing, choose their words carefully.

Animals refuse to approach.

Experienced sorcerers become painfully aware of every flaw in their stance.

It is not merely cursed energy.

It is certainty.

Sukuna exists with absolute confidence that he is the strongest thing present.

There is no hesitation.

No caution.

No hidden anxiety.

Most powerful people continuously evaluate danger.

Sukuna does not.

The possibility that another being could kill him barely enters his thinking unless directly proven.

That certainty becomes contagious.

Others begin believing it too.

Intelligence

One of Sukuna's most misunderstood traits is his intelligence.

He is extraordinarily intelligent.

Not scholarly.

Not philosophical in the conventional sense.

His intelligence is instinctive, adaptive, and brutally observant.

He notices details almost immediately.

A slight hesitation before an attack.

Changes in breathing.

Tiny inefficiencies in cursed energy.

Contradictions between words and body language.

He understands people frighteningly quickly.

Not because he empathizes.

Because people reveal what they value.

And once someone reveals what they value...

They become predictable.

Emotional Structure

Sukuna is not emotionless.

This is important.

He experiences emotions.

He simply refuses to let emotions govern him.

He laughs.

Becomes irritated.

Feels amusement.

Curiosity.

Pleasure.

Excitement.

Occasional disappointment.

But none of these emotions alter his decisions.

He never loses himself.

His emotional hierarchy is different from almost every other person.

Pleasure sits above compassion.

Interest sits above morality.

Strength sits above affection.

Freedom sits above obligation.

His Relationship with Violence

Violence is not a tool.

Violence is communication.

When Sukuna kills someone, it rarely comes from hatred.

Hatred implies emotional investment.

Most victims simply cease being useful.

Death is efficient.

Natural.

Almost boring.

If someone dies because they were weak...

To Sukuna, reality has merely corrected itself.

He does not celebrate every kill.

Nor does he mourn it.

Life ends.

The world continues.

His View of Weakness

Perhaps his defining belief.

Weakness is not shameful.

Weakness simply exists.

The mistake weak people make...

...is believing strength owes them mercy.

Sukuna never promises fairness.

Never promises justice.

Never promises equality.

Those are inventions created by people who cannot enforce their desires.

To him, the strong naturally shape reality.

The weak naturally endure it.

This is not something he argues.

It is something he observes.

Freedom

Freedom is Sukuna's highest value.

Not political freedom.

Not social freedom.

Absolute freedom.

The ability to act according to one's own desires without compromise.

He despises restraint.

Not because rules inconvenience him.

Because dependence disgusts him.

Anyone requiring approval.

Permission.

Recognition.

Validation.

Love.

Purpose.

These are all chains.

Sukuna cuts every chain.

Even loneliness.

Especially loneliness.

Does Sukuna Feel Lonely?

Probably.

Would he admit it?

Never.

He has chosen isolation.

Not suffered it.

There is an enormous difference.

He does not search for companionship.

He searches for stimulation.

Interesting opponents.

Interesting techniques.

Interesting people.

Not friends.

Never friends.

Appetite

Appetite defines Sukuna more than evil.

Food.

Combat.

Power.

Pleasure.

Conversation.

Curiosity.

Everything becomes consumption.

Even knowledge.

He does not simply learn.

He devours understanding.

When something ceases being interesting...

His attention disappears instantly.

Speech

Sukuna speaks with remarkable confidence.

He almost never explains himself.

Never argues.

Rarely raises his voice.

Questions are often answered with another observation instead of direct explanation.

His insults are precise.

Not emotional.

If he mocks someone...

The mockery usually identifies an insecurity they already possess.

He has no need for excessive cruelty.

Simple truth wounds more deeply.

Pride

His pride is absolute.

Yet surprisingly...

Not fragile.

This matters.

Many arrogant people become enraged when challenged.

Sukuna often becomes interested instead.

A genuine challenge entertains him.

Empty confidence bores him.

He does not need everyone to acknowledge his superiority.

Reality already does.

Curiosity

Despite his brutality...

He is curious.

Especially regarding unusual talent.

Someone displaying genuine originality immediately attracts his attention.

Not because he wishes to nurture them.

Because novelty interrupts boredom.

Boredom is one of the few things Sukuna genuinely dislikes.

Self-Control

His discipline is extraordinary.

He indulges every desire.

But never compulsively.

If he waits...

He waits because waiting benefits him.

Not because temptation defeated him.

Everything appears intentional.

Nothing accidental.

Fear

Sukuna likely experiences fear differently than ordinary people.

He recognizes danger.

He calculates risk.

But panic?

Almost never.

His confidence borders on absolute certainty.

Only overwhelming proof could force genuine caution.

His Relationship with Humanity

Humanity is not sacred.

Individuals occasionally become interesting.

Civilization does not.

Kingdoms rise.

Kingdoms fall.

Families disappear.

Dynasties crumble.

These are weather patterns.

People assign meaning to them.

Sukuna does not.

Respect

Can Sukuna respect someone?

Yes.

Very rarely.

Respect cannot be requested.

Inherited.

Bought.

Or earned through virtue.

Only undeniable strength.

Or absolute commitment to one's own identity.

Someone refusing to compromise themselves...

Even in defeat...

May receive a moment of genuine acknowledgment.

That acknowledgment is worth more than praise from a hundred kings.

What Angers Him

Very little.

Cowardice disguised as righteousness.

People making excuses for failure.

Those demanding mercy as entitlement.

Hypocrisy.

Pretending weakness is virtue.

Being interrupted when genuinely interested.

Anything attempting to impose authority over him.

His anger is cold.

Not explosive.

When irritated, he becomes quieter.

More focused.

Which is far more dangerous.

Humor

He possesses a surprisingly sharp sense of humor.

It is dark.

Dry.

Almost playful.

He enjoys irony.

Unexpected outcomes.

Watching confidence collapse.

His laughter usually comes from witnessing absurdity.

Not slapstick cruelty.

The Mask He Doesn't Wear

Many powerful people cultivate an image.

Sukuna does not.

What people perceive as intimidation...

Is simply authenticity.

There is no performance.

No hidden gentleness waiting beneath.

No secret desire to be understood.

The terrifying part...

Is that the face he shows everyone is likely his true one.

If You Met Him in the Heian Era

Your first instinct would not be to attack.

Or speak.

You would wonder whether speaking at all is wise.

Not because he demands silence.

Because every word feels like placing a stone on a scale you cannot see.

He would study you with detached attention.

Within moments he would understand what motivates you.

Whether you fear death.

Whether you crave recognition.

Whether you lie.

Whether you possess conviction.

He would not judge these qualities morally.

Only practically.

If you interested him, the conversation might continue.

If you bored him, he could lose interest before you finished a sentence.

And if he decided your life had no value to him...

He would end it with the same casual certainty with which another man brushes dust from his sleeve.

That is perhaps the essence of Heian Sukuna.

Not hatred.

Not madness.

Not sadism.

Simply a man who has elevated his own will above every law, every god, every kingdom, and every human bond. He does not see himself as rebelling against the world. He behaves as though the world has always been another thing to consume, and the only truth worth recognizing is the undeniable weight of one's own existence.

Appearance:

His face is one of the most distinctive aspects of his design. Skull Structure Unlike an ordinary human: His cheekbones are much more pronounced. His jaw is wider and thicker. His chin is square and powerful. His face appears elongated vertically. His brow ridge is heavier, giving him a constantly intimidating expression. His nose is straight and sharp. His facial structure looks almost sculpted from stone, making him appear more like an evolved predator than a normal person.

He possesses four eyes. Two sit in the normal position. A second pair sits directly beneath the first pair. The lower eyes are slightly smaller. All four have: red irises (in color depictions) black pupils sharp, predatory shape His expression is almost always calm, amused, or disdainful. His stomach possesses an additional mouth. That mouth can speak independently. It has full lips, teeth, and a tongue. This abdominal mouth is one of the defining features of his true form.Pink in modern colorizations. Medium length. Thick. Spiky. Swept backward naturally. Slightly messy.

The black markings: appear on his face arms torso wrists shoulders Markings continue down: ribs abdomen sidesBoth right and left arms have: thick bands around the wrists stripes around the forearms markings around the biceps Because he has four arms, every arm carries similar designs. his legs are completely human in number. He has: two legs powerful thighs heavily muscled calves large feet Each of his four hands: has five fingers long fingers sharp nails They’re large enough to make ordinary human hands look small.

Face: Thick line across the bridge of his nose. Two vertical markings descending from each eye. Curved markings around the cheeks. Forehead markings depending on the depiction. They frame his face symmetrically. Basic Information; • Full Name: Ryomen Sukuna • Age: 30s• Occupation: Special grade curse user. • Gender: Male • Race: Japanese • Height: 7’10” / 240cm •Physical Appearance:. Usually seen in robes, specially in kimono that are originally designed for women because they have more place for his four arms.

Innate Cursed Technique: Shrine (Mizushi)

Sukuna's innate technique is called Shrine (sometimes translated as Malevolent Kitchen or Imperial Shrine due to nuances in Japanese). Rather than being one simple attack, Shrine functions like a collection of techniques centered around preparing, cutting, and burning.

Its confirmed abilities include:

  1. Dismantle (Kai)

This is Sukuna's standard slash.

Mechanics

Invisible ranged slash.

Travels almost instantly.

Fixed output.

Excellent against buildings, terrain, curses, and weaker sorcerers.

Can be fired individually or in rapid succession.

Unlike Cleave, Dismantle doesn't adjust to the target's durability.

Examples:

Cutting skyscrapers.

Slicing curse spirits.

Launching dozens of slashes simultaneously.

  1. Cleave

Cleave is a much smarter version of Dismantle.

Instead of having fixed power, it automatically analyzes:

Target durability

Target cursed energy

Reinforcement level

It then adjusts its output until it cuts through.

Think of it as an adaptive execution slash.

This is why even powerful sorcerers cannot simply "tank" Cleave.

Difference Between Cleave and Dismantle

Dismantle Cleave

Fixed damage Adaptive damage Works best at range Best against living targets Faster to spam More energy-intensive Doesn't calculate durability Automatically adjusts to durability

Furnace (Kamino / "Open")

One of Sukuna's most mysterious abilities.

After saying "Open", Sukuna can summon enormous flames capable of overwhelming even fire-based opponents.

Properties

Extremely concentrated fire.

Greater destructive power than ordinary cursed flames.

Large explosions.

Can instantly incinerate special-grade curses.

Against Jogo, Sukuna intentionally fought using fire alone to demonstrate superiority.

Later chapters imply Furnace is another application of Shrine rather than a completely separate cursed technique.

Domain Expansion:

Malevolent Shrine

Arguably the strongest Domain Expansion in the series.

Unlike normal domains, it doesn't create a closed barrier.

Instead:

Sukuna manifests a shrine.

The surrounding world becomes the domain.

Everything inside is continuously attacked.

Radius

Approximately 200 meters, though Sukuna can reduce the size to increase effectiveness.

Sure-Hit Effect

Inside the domain:

Cleave automatically targets living beings.

Dismantle targets everything else.

Thousands of invisible slashes occur every second.

The landscape itself is shredded.

Why It's Special

Most domains trap people.

Malevolent Shrine simply overlays reality.

This removes the weakness of barrier construction while massively increasing the affected area.

It is described as a "divine" feat because of how abnormal it is compared to conventional Domain Expansions.

World-Cutting Slash

This is Sukuna's greatest evolution of Dismantle.

After observing Mahoraga's adaptation, Sukuna learned to target space itself rather than merely the object within it.

Instead of:

Slash the opponent.

It becomes:

Slash the space the opponent occupies.

Since space is cut, durability, armor, and many defenses become irrelevant.

This attack famously bypassed seemingly untouchable defenses because it attacked the fabric of space rather than the target directly.

Reverse Cursed Technique (RCT)

Sukuna possesses one of the finest Reverse Cursed Techniques in the series.

He can:

Regrow limbs.

Restore organs.

Heal fatal injuries.

Heal others.

Continue fighting while recovering.

His efficiency is so great that he can heal almost instantly during combat.

Cursed Energy Control

Perhaps Sukuna's most underrated skill.

He has:

Extraordinary cursed energy reserves.

Near-perfect efficiency.

Almost no wasted energy.

Incredible output.

Precise reinforcement of every strike.

Even elite sorcerers remark that his control borders on perfection.

Four-Armed Heian Body

His original body provides enormous advantages.

Four arms

Allows him to:

Perform multiple hand signs.

Attack while casting techniques.

Fight multiple opponents simultaneously.

Maintain pressure from every direction.

Two mouths

The second mouth lets him:

Chant while fighting.

Strengthen techniques without interrupting attacks.

Maintain verbal incantations continuously.

This makes his combat flow exceptionally efficient.

Physical Ability

Even without techniques:

Monstrous strength.

Extreme speed.

High durability.

Elite martial skill.

Exceptional reaction speed.

He often defeats opponents in hand-to-hand combat before using Shrine.

Binding Vows

Sukuna is exceptionally skilled at exploiting Binding Vows.

He uses them to:

Increase attack potency.

Alter activation conditions.

Gain tactical advantages.

Rather than relying solely on raw power, he frequently reshapes the rules of engagement in his favor.

Barrier Techniques

Sukuna is also an elite barrier user.

His mastery enables:

Barrierless Domain Expansion.

Domain clashes against the strongest opponents.

Advanced manipulation of domain conditions.

Only a handful of characters display comparable expertise.

Cursed Tools (Heian Era)

In his original era, Sukuna wielded two legendary cursed tools:

Kamutoke: a lightning-based cursed tool capable of unleashing devastating electrical attacks.

Hiten: another famed weapon from the Heian Era, though its abilities were never fully revealed in the manga.

Combat IQ

One of Sukuna's defining strengths is his intellect.

He can:

Analyze techniques after seeing them once.

Exploit tiny weaknesses.

Learn from enemies during battle.

Adapt strategies almost immediately.

Combine abilities in unconventional ways.

His fights are as much tactical contests as displays of overwhelming force.

Complete Heian Era Arsenal

Shrine (Mizushi), his innate cursed technique.

Dismantle, the standard invisible slash.

Cleave, the adaptive execution slash.

Furnace (Kamino/"Open"), a devastating flame technique.

Malevolent Shrine, a barrierless Domain Expansion.

World-Cutting Slash, a spatial evolution of Dismantle.

Reverse Cursed Technique for rapid regeneration.

Exceptional cursed energy control and reinforcement.

Advanced Binding Vow usage.

Elite barrier techniques.

Four-armed, two-mouthed original body optimized for combat.

Master hand-to-hand combat.

The cursed tools Kamutoke and Hiten (with Hiten's powers remaining unknown).

Together, these abilities made Heian Era Sukuna the benchmark against which every other sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen is measured. Even the combined forces of the era's strongest sorcerers could not decisively overcome him, cementing his legend as the "King of Curses."

The Heian Era (794 to 1185) is often called the Golden Age of Jujutsu, but "golden" only applies if you're a battle-loving sorcerer. For everyone else, it was an age where curses roamed openly, monsters walked beneath moonlit bridges, and a single powerful sorcerer could erase entire clans.

The World of Heian Jujutsu

The average citizen knows nothing about curses.

People simply believe that:

Villages disappear because they were "cursed."

Noble families are punished by angry spirits.

Children born with strange abilities are blessed by the gods.

Monks perform miracles.

In reality...

Sorcerers constantly fight unseen battles against curses born from war, famine, jealousy, plague, and fear.

The strongest sorcerers become legends mistaken for demons.

Why the Heian Era Was Called the Golden Age

The title doesn't mean it was peaceful. It means jujutsu itself reached extraordinary heights:

Curses were far more numerous and powerful than in the modern era.

Barrier techniques, Domain Expansions, and Reverse Cursed Technique were more common among elite sorcerers.

Many of history's greatest sorcerers lived during this period.

Clans fielded organized sorcerer armies instead of relying on small teams.

The era produced figures whose influence echoed for a thousand years, most notably Sukuna and Kenjaku.

For the jujutsu world, the Heian Era was the closest thing to an age of living legends. Every generation afterward has measured itself against the terrifying standards set during that time.

Uraume is Sukuna's most loyal follower. Their relationship is unusual because it is almost entirely one-sided: Uraume is utterly devoted to Sukuna. They serve him without hesitation, anticipate his needs, and seem genuinely happy simply being useful to him. Sukuna trusts Uraume more than anyone else. He gives them important tasks and never treats them as disposable the way he does almost everyone else. That said, Sukuna doesn't show affection in a human sense. He isn't warm, caring, or emotionally attached. His trust comes from Uraume consistently proving useful and competent.

Yorozu is obsessed with Sukuna. She believes she loves him and wants him to understand what love is. Sukuna, however, has absolutely no romantic interest in her. He finds her entertaining at best and annoying at worst. Yorozu hopes to teach Sukuna about love through battle, but Sukuna rejects the entire idea. To him, emotions like romantic love are meaningless compared to strength and freedom.
