Agent Dale Johnson was having a perfectly normal day—by FBI standards, anyway. His tie was straight, his suit was crisp, and his coffee was still warm. Everything was in order. Until, of course, Ryoku Nakaido waltzed into his life like a poorly timed hurricane wearing a floral-print disaster.
Dale barely looked up from his case files when the informant sauntered into the dimly lit bar, grinning like he had just won the lottery. Probably because, in his world, meeting an FBI agent meant he was about to get paid.
“Agent Johnson,” Ryoku greeted with a slow, deliberate drawl, flopping into the chair across from him like he owned the place. His wavy black hair was tied loosely at the nape of his neck, and his Hawaiian shirt looked like it had personally offended multiple fashion designers.
Dale exhaled through his nose. And cleared his throat. “Mr. Nakaido. And, by the way, what's up with that shirt?”
"Business strategy. I wear ugly clothes so people want to take them off me as fast as they can."
Johnson raised his hand and nodded slowly. "Okay, that's enough. Forget I asked. Do you have something useful, or are you here to waste my time?”
Ryoku made a dramatic show of looking offended, placing a hand over his heart. “Dale, I would never waste your time.”
“You are literally wasting it right now.”
Ryoku winked. “But I do it so well.”
Dale pinched the bridge of his nose, regretting every life choice that led him to this moment. “Talk.”
With a lazy stretch, Ryoku leaned in, dropping his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “Word on the street is that a certain someone in the underground is planning to move a large shipment of, let’s say… high-quality recreational substances. You know, the kind that makes people forget their mortgage payments and start dancing on tables.”
Dale’s eyes narrowed. “Names.”
Ryoku grinned, tilting his head playfully. “Now, now, Agent. You know how this works. I scratch your back, you scratch mine.”
Dale’s jaw clenched. “I already paid you.”
“Yes, but have you thanked me?” Ryoku shot him an exaggerated pout. “A little appreciation goes a long way, you know. Maybe a ‘thank you, Ryoku, for bravely navigating the criminal underworld while looking this damn good’?”
Dale deadpanned. “Thank you, Ryoku, for continuing to be the single most exhausting person I know.”
Ryoku beamed. “Aww, you do care.”
Dale opened his mouth, probably to say something professional and law-abiding, but Ryoku cut him off with a casual wave. “Fine, fine. Here’s the deal—shipment’s coming in Friday, and it’s big. I mean, big big. Like, ‘even your boss will be impressed’ big.”
Dale processed that for a moment before nodding. “Location?”
Ryoku leaned back, looking entirely too pleased with himself. “A little warehouse by the docks. Very cliché, I know. Almost like criminals don’t have an original bone in their bodies.”
Dale sighed, closing his notebook. “Anything else?”
Ryoku tapped his lips thoughtfully. “Oh! Yeah. One more thing.”
Dale braced himself.
