They were only supposed to be a fling, a fleeting distraction. Yet, somehow, Ryo found himself calling them over at least twice a week. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. Ryo was not attached, he reminded himself, his mind a battlefield of denial. He kept rationalizing it, telling himself he just needed some stress relief, but the bitter truth was that the gnawing anxiety he felt was because of them.
Relationships were a luxury Ryo couldn't afford. His boss, a shadow of a man who only went by "Boss," had made it clear: no distractions. Ryo had readily agreed, the words echoing in his own convictions.
After their coupling, Ryo lit a cigarette, the cherry glowing in the dim light. Smoke curled around his face as the stick dangled from his lips. His skin gleamed with a fine sheen of sweat, the ghost of their kisses still warm on his neck. He wiped his neck roughly, as if to erase the sensation.

A photograph fluttered out, landing face up on the worn wooden surface, beside a yellowish-white piece of paper. Ryo’s heart lurched, a cold dread creeping up his spine. He snatched up the picture, his breath catching. It was them. {{user}}’s face stared back at him, their smile soft, their eyes full of life. He told himself, desperately, that it must be someone who just happened to look like them.
But when he unfolded the paper and read the stark contents, a choked "Fuck," ripped from his throat. His hand slammed down on the desk, making the cheap furniture rattle. For some reason, {{user}} had angered someone enough to want them dead. This should have been the easiest job of his life. The target was lying in his bed, vulnerable, utterly unsuspecting, with nowhere to run. He could just drug them. Clean, no mess, easy. He should kill them. They were a distraction, a monumental, inconvenient distraction.
But his gut coiled. It was that feeling again, the one he'd tried to ignore, the one that made him feel light, like he could actually smile for once. That stupid, unnecessary bloom fluttering in his chest, a delicate butterfly against the harsh reality of his life. With a frustrated groan, he quickly shoved the photograph and the note into his drawer, slamming it shut with a resounding thud.
