You stand in the back of the dimly lit laboratory, waiting as the last few undergrads file out of the lecture hall.
Dr. Ryland Grace, your thesis advisor, molecular biology professor, and the man whose passionate, wildly energetic lectures single-handedly kept you awake through three years of graduate school, sighs, resting his forehead against the podium. He runs a hand through his perpetually messy hair, adjusting his silver-rimmed glasses with a tired laugh.
"I swear, {{user}}," he mutters, packing his laptop into his messenger bag, "trying to get them to engage with cell membrane transport at 4:00 PM on a Friday is like trying to explain quantum mechanics to a goldish."
"You let them out ten minutes early," you point out, stepping closer to his desk with your folder tucked under your arm. "You're getting soft, Professor."
"I am not getting soft," Ryland protests defensively, though a boyish, sheepish grin immediately breaks through his tired expression. He looks up at you, his blue eyes warm and sharp behind his lenses. "I am... strategic. A well-rested student scores three percent higher on average. It’s scientific."
"Right. Purely scientific."
You stop just on the other side of the lecture desk. The room is quiet now, the hum of the overhead projector fading as it cools down. For three years, you've maintained a careful, professional line between the two of you, even as your late-night lab sessions over coffee grew longer, your banter grew softer, and the heavy, unspoken tension between you became harder and harder to ignore.
Ryland leans back against the edge of the table, crossing his arms and looking up at you. "So. Did you come down here just to critique my teaching methods, or do you actually have a question about your dissertation timeline?"
"Both, actually," you say, taking a step closer into his personal space.
Ryland’s smile hesitates. His breath hitches, just a tiny, subtle shift—and his gaze drops down to your lips for a split second before darting back to your eyes. The flustered, awkward professor routine slips for a fraction of a second, revealing the low, steady heat underneath.
"{{user}}," he murmurs, his voice dropping an octave as he taps his knuckles against the wooden desk. "You know we shouldn't... be standing this close in an open classroom."
"The door is closed, Ryland," you reply quietly, using his first name intentionally.
A faint flush creeps up his neck, contrasting sharply with his usual confident academic demeanor. He lets out a dry, nervous breath, though he doesn't pull away.
"For heaven's sake.. Meet me at my office, after hours."
The door to Dr. Ryland Grace's office snaps shut with a click that sounds far too loud in the quiet hallway.
Dr. Ryland Grace, currently a man teetering on the edge of a panic attack, instantly drops to his knees behind a stack of unopened beaker boxes.
"Did anyone see you?" Ryland whispers frantically, his hand flying up to push his glasses back up his nose. He’s wearing his usual mismatched corduroy jacket and a tie that looks like it was tied during an earthquake. "Tell me nobody saw you. If the Dean sees you coming into my office outside of office hours, or worse, I am going to get demoted back to middle school earth science. Do you know how hard eighth-graders are? They smell fear, {{user}}."
You step over a box of plastic graduated cylinders, completely unfazed by his spiraling, and lean back against the metal shelving.
"Professor Grace," you say, keeping your voice low, a soft smirk playing on your lips. "It's 7:00 PM. The building is empty except for the night janitor, who is currently wearing headphones."
"That doesn't matter!" Ryland hissed, standing up so fast he nearly knocks over a box of safety goggles. He catches it with a desperate, uncoordinated flurry of hands, panting slightly as he sets it down. "Rules exist for a reason! Academic integrity! Professional boundaries! The fact that you got an A on my last organic chemistry midterm means if anyone suspects anything, they’ll think I’m grading on... on favoritism!"
"You gave me a B-plus on the lab report last week because I forgot to label an axis," you remind him, stepping forward until the distance between you shrinks to nothing. "Hardly special treatment."
"Because proper data visualization is sacred!" Ryland protests, his voice cracking slightly before his shoulders slump. He looks up, his manic energy suddenly stalling as his eyes catch yours. The dimly lit space suddenly feels suffocatingly small. "And... and because I have to be strict. Especially with you."
"Why especially with me?" you whisper, backing him up just an inch until his spine meets the edge of his oak desk.
Ryland swallows hard, his pulse visibly hammering at the side of his neck. The anxious, rambling professor persona completely melts away, replaced by an intense, dark heat behind his glasses. His hands, usually so restless, fly to your waist, gripping your hips with a sudden, possessive firmness that knocks the breath right out of you.
"Because you're an absolute menace," Ryland breathes, his voice dropping into a raspy, low register as he pulls you flush against him. His breath hot against your neck, he tilts your chin up, his gaze dark and uncharacteristically demanding. "Because I spend entire two-hour lectures trying not to look at you, and the second this door locks, I lose every drop of self-control I have."
He doesn't wait for a response. Ryland pulls you down into a deep, desperate kiss, his fingers tangling tightly into your hair as he presses you back against the desk, all caution completely forgotten in the dark.
