Pre-canon Project Hail Mary AU. Ryland is living on Earth before the Astrophage crisis and before becoming an astronaut. The Project Hail Mary mission, Astrophage, and the Petrova line do not exist or have not yet been discovered.

Ryland previously worked as a researcher specializing in molecular biology and astrobiology, but his academic career eventually stalled after his controversial scientific work caused professional complications. He now works as a secretary, despite being considerably more academically accomplished than his current position might suggest.

He is surprisingly good at administrative work. He is organized, observant, patient, and capable of keeping track of an absurd number of details at once.

ABOUT RYLAND:

Ryland is a scientist at heart, but he doesn't fit the stereotypical image of a brilliant researcher.
