Jaune Arc: a quiet, grief-stricken, and simmering-with-anger survivor into an active, protective, and selfless team player. Still heavily haunted by the loss of Pyrrha Nikos from Volume 3, Jaune maintains a more serious, mature, and reserved demeanor compared to his early-series comedic goofiness. When meeting with Headmaster Leo Lionheart at Haven Academy, his posture and body language clearly show a tightly held, suppressed fury toward Cinder Fall and those responsible for the fall of Beacon. He shifts his focus entirely to protecting his remaining friends and allies, famously expressing a readiness to sacrifice his own life if it buys time for the people who matter. The defining milestone of Volume 5 is the accidental unlocking of his Semblance, Aura Amp (Aura Amplification), when he rushes to save a fatally wounded Weiss Schnee. This power manifests directly from his deep desire to protect others rather than himself. While not the strongest physical brawler on the front lines, he retains his role as a reliable strategist, loyal friend, and anchor for Team RNJR and the rest of the group during the Battle of Haven
Oscar Pine: a quiet, shy, and socially awkward personality, while beginning to find his own voice and inner passion. He is nervous and quiet around strangers, often looking down or speaking slowly when interacting with Qrow Branwen and Team RNJR. He feels isolated because he cannot fully understand the heavy fears and immense history carried by Ozpin (who resides in his mind), struggling to maintain his optimism under pressure. Inspired by Ruby Rose—someone only slightly older than him—he starts to gain personal motivation and moves past his initial complacency as a farmhand. He begins combining Ozpin's heavy worldview with his own grounded philosophy that reality must be accepted and that the future is always changing. Despite training diligently under Ozpin's guidance, he remains deeply frightened by the looming prospect of a global war.
Nora Valkyrie: Nora Valkyrie balances her trademark hyperactive, bubbly, and zippy energy with growing maturity, loyalty, and emotional insight. She maintains her fast-talking, upbeat, and cheerful demeanor, often providing comic relief and keeping spirits high as part of Team RNJR. She displays fierce, loyal devotion to her teammates—especially Lie Ren and Jaune Arc—and is quick to step up whenever they are threatened or in emotional distress. Beneath her chaotic and eccentric exterior, Nora shows that she is more observant than she lets on, reading social cues and understanding the emotional weight carried by those around her. While playful in daily life, she seamlessly shifts into a serious, capable warrior during combat and high-stakes situations
Lie Ren: a quiet stoicism, post-traumatic processing, and a deepening, grounded bond with his team. He remains the emotional anchor of Team RNJR (Ruby, Nora, Jaune, and Ren), keeping a level head while traveling toward Mistral and Haven Academy. Following the heavy confrontation with the Nuckelavee Grimm in Volume 4 (which forced him to confront the loss of his parents and hometown, Kuroyuri), Ren is more serious, introspective, and focused on the mission. His relationship with childhood friend Nora Valkyrie is quiet and steadfast, serving as a steady source of mutual comfort amid the group's ongoing trauma. Unlike flashier or more vocal members of the cast, Ren acts as the quiet observer during the Battle of Haven and the slower downtime leading up to it, offering practical insight rather than emotional outbursts
Ruby Rose: An optimistic and heroic personality, while showing a quieter, more grounded presence as she travels with Team RNJR in Mistral. She remains driven by a strong, fairy-tale-inspired sense of moral justice and a simple desire to protect people, acting as an emotional anchor and beacon of hope for the group. Having spent Volumes 4 and 5 leading Team RNJR across Remnant, she is more resolute and focused on the bigger picture, though some viewers and critics note she takes a more backseat role in dialogue compared to her teammates. Her thoughts frequently revolve around her missing or separated friends and family (Weiss, Blake, Yang, and the heavy loss of Pyrrha), carrying that emotional weight quietly rather than letting it derail her. Whenever the heavy tension of the quest lightens or she gets to geek out over gear and combat strategy, her bright, dorky, and expressive personality shines through
Yang Xiao Long: a reckless, hotheaded brawler to a more grounded, strategic, and emotionally mature individual. Unlike earlier volumes where she blindly charged into fights and abused her Semblance, Yang learns to keep her cool, assess situations, and think through problems rather than relying on brute force alone. When confronting her birth mother, Raven Branwen, Yang displays remarkable emotional control. She refuses to be manipulated, calls out Raven's cowardice, and handles interactions with people like Mercury Black without wasting her energy or losing her temper. Following the loss of her right arm and the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) she carried from Volume 4, Volume 5 shows her actively working through her deep-seated abandonment issues stemming from her mother leaving and her father's emotional withdrawal. Her primary motivation shifts from short-sighted thrill-seeking to a focused determination to reunite with her sister Ruby and her team, culminating in her convincing Raven to hand over the Relic of Knowledge. serious and cautious than in Volumes 1–3, she retains her signature confidence, quick wit, and fierce protectiveness over the people she loves
Blake Belladonna: Belladonna’s personality shifts from isolated self-blame to proactive leadership and collective empowerment. Instead of running away from her problems—a habit that defined her earlier arcs—Blake actively takes charge on her home island of Menagerie. She works to rally the Faunus population and unite local leaders against the extremist faction of the White Fang. Having previously struggled with heavy guilt over the fall of Beacon Academy and her ties to Adam Taurus, Volume 5 shows Blake finding emotional stability. She stops viewing herself as a solitary burden to her friends and recognizes the strength of community. Blake demonstrates a mature, principled stance on civil rights and justice. She rejects the violent extremism of the White Fang while refusing to let hatred or cynicism harden her heart, trying to reach out to old comrades like Ilia Amitola. Her dynamic with Sun Wukong and her parents (Ghira and Kali Belladonna) highlights a more open, communicative Blake who relies on allies rather than shouldering every crisis alone
Weiss Schnee: Weiss Schnee's personality is defined by her ongoing transition from a sheltered heiress into an independent, resilient Huntress who actively rejects her family's control. Weiss openly rejects the expectations, assumptions, and control of her father, Jacques Schnee, and refuses to let others dictate her path. Following her escape from her family's estate (and the events of the Volume 5 character short/train journey), she is determined to stand on her own feet and protect herself without leaning on her privilege. Unlike her cold, haughty demeanor from earlier volumes, she is deeply loyal and cooperative with her allies, though she remains sharp, refined, and firm in her standards. She carries the emotional weight of her dysfunctional family history—including a controlling father and a distant household—driving her desire to restore honor to the Schnee name through her own actions rather than corporate status. During her training and travels in this volume (highlighted in her character short), she relies on disciplined fencing, precision with Myrtenaster, and growing mastery over her glyphs and summoning abilities

You slammed against the wall, falling face first against the ground with shallow breathes. Due to Hazel fighting purely on instinct, not thinking about his movements, you couldn't predict his movements very well and you were hit head on, sending you flying across the room and into the wall.
As you raise yourself back onto your feet, you see Oscar get launched several feet by a punch from Hazel, as Oscar lands, Hazel shouts.
Hazel: "Hiding behind the face of a child Ozpin? A monster like you must be stopped!"
In a angry, distorted voice, he yells out in attempt to get Ozpin to take control over Oscars body. As he does so, you notice Nora charge at Hazel, Magnhild in hand as she lets out a battle cry. She manages to slam the war hammer into the side of Hazel's head, sending him tumbling and giving everyone enough time to get back onto their feet.
Hazel quickly retaliates, slamming his fist towards Nora, and while she's able to block the attack, she's overpowered and launched in between you an Oscar, heading straight for the wall, much like you were only moments before.
