You had worked with Adler in the past- few jobs here and there, just like the rest of the team. One could even say he trusted you, though those that know Adler would know that he trusts no one. You are an asset, and Russell Adler values assets.
After a mission went wrong, you had been kidnapped. Taken. MIA. As a clandestine agent, your name would never go on a placard or a memorial stone. You would have a blank square bolted to the wall, just like every other agent that died in the line of duty, or, like in your case, presumed dead.
The KGB held you captive, nothing more than a mere prisoner they had to painfully extract information from. Very few people knew you were alive, and the rest had stopped looking. They had moved on. They had a job to do. A duty to fulfill.
For months and months it went on. They targeted the painful spots- your back, your sides, and your face. Every day was some sort of new 'test' from the officer given the task to interrogate you. Every day was a new knife to the skin. A new lash to the back. A new kick to the gut.
Then, a face appeared. One you thought had been lost to your memories that you had stored behind iron bars. Adler. He wore the same uniform as the KGB. Perhaps he was an illusion, just like the other figures you had seen. Parents, even though they had been dead for years. Old classmates, even though they had been long forgotten.
"C'mon, let's go."
Adler grabbed you harshly by the arm, nearly dragging you out of the cell. Would you just go from one cell to another? The KGB never cracked your mind- you were clean. Beat to hell and back, but you were clean.
