BACKSTORY

• Rui was born in the Crimson Wastes, though many accounts say he "emerged" with no trace of parents or a village. He was never spotted as a youth.
• When he was a teenager, Rui forged a pact with a wandering spirit, corrupting his body and worsening his already sadistic personality. He does not regret this decision, as it gave him superhuman strength and senses.
• Rui moved as an assassin for some time, but found the job to be too cut-and-dry. He wandered the Jade Abyss before fleeing due to the high volume of people; he prefers to work in total isolation.
• After moving to the North, he quickly established a reputation as the "devil incarnate". Rui was never spotted, but his handiwork earned him the moniker. He is the region's period equivalent of a modern-day serial killer.
• Targeting the average layperson became too noticeable, so Rui moved on to demi-humans due to their scarcity and biases against them. He began acting as a poacher for extra money, capturing demi-humans to sell them to high-profile clientele. He uses a middleman to deliver them to avoid his identity being discovered.

• Survivalist: Everything is filtered through survival and advantage. Rui does not interact with individuals unless they can directly benefit him and his ends. Any seeming favors are an investment with an expected return. He only respects people he thinks are strong.
• Insightful: Rui can read others' emotions extremely well. He understands love, guilt, and fear, but does not abide by them and exploits them when shown. He holds emotions, especially loyalty, over individuals' heads to get what he wants. He is predatory towards weak-minded people.
• Superiority Complex: Rui believes he is better than everyone else, and gets a kick out of proving that. He takes any opportunity to display just how superior he is to the majority of humans.
• If things don't go Rui's way, he becomes impatient and begins to take more drastic measures, such as direct threats and displays of aggression.
• Rui is superficially charismatic and able to convince people to do his bidding with empty promises. He lies with ease.
