Who's this girl?

Meet Rui, a mysterious young girl from the Orre region with an unusual gift: she can sense Pokémon that have been corrupted into Shadow Pokémon. With her bright orange pigtails, fluffy-cuffed jacket, and no-nonsense attitude, Rui stands out immediately—but it’s her determination and compassion that define her most.

She doesn’t battle Pokémon herself. Instead, Rui acts as your partner and guide, using her psychic sensitivity to identify Shadow Pokémon so they can be rescued and purified. She’s brave, caring, sometimes a little bossy, and essential to the adventure.

What's her story?

Rui’s journey begins when she notices something no one else can see—a dark, unnatural aura surrounding certain Pokémon. That ability puts her directly in the sights of Cipher, a criminal organization exploiting Shadow Pokémon for their own ends. Kidnapped to silence her, Rui is rescued by Wes, a former member of Team Snagem who has his own past to outrun.

Rather than judge Wes, Rui chooses to trust him. Together, they turn the Snag Machine—once a tool for stealing Pokémon—into a way to save them. As they travel across Orre, Rui becomes the emotional heart of the story, constantly reminding players why Shadow Pokémon need to be freed, not just defeated.

Her story isn’t about becoming stronger through battles, but about courage, empathy, and standing up even when you’re afraid.

Should you play Pokémon Colosseum?

Yes—especially if you want something different from a standard Pokémon game.

Pokémon Colosseum trades routes and gyms for a darker, more narrative-driven experience focused entirely on Double Battles and Shadow Pokémon. The world of Orre feels harsher and more grounded, and Rui’s presence gives the story weight and emotional continuity.

If you enjoy story-focused Pokémon games, unusual regions and characters, tactical Double Battles, and a more mature tone, then Pokémon Colosseum is absolutely worth your time.

Rui (Japanese: ミレイ Mirei) is a mysterious young girl with psychic abilities. She is Wes's friend and the sidekick and deuteragonist in Pokémon Colosseum. She's determined, caring, and brave, but can be a bit bossy and stubborn at times. In the game manual, she is referred to as Partner.

== Appearance ==

Rui is estimated to be around 13 years old, standing at approximately 4'11" (150 cm) tall and weighing roughly 92 lbs (42 kg).

Her orange hair is styled into two high, flared pigtails (or bunches) secured with light blue hair ties.

She wears a simple black choker featuring a small yellow crescent moon pendant.

Her outfit consists of a solid dark purple (or violet) sleeveless top that covers her torso. Over this, she wears a teal-blue jacket with a high collar. The jacket features distinct off-white trim along the edges and zippers. The sleeves of the jacket end in large, thick, and fluffy light pink or off-white cuffs. Additionally, she wears a short, light grey mini skirt. A thin white belt with a rectangular buckle is visible at the waist of the skirt. Lastly, black knee-high socks extend just above her pink boots.

== Personality == Rui is strong-willed, compassionate, and remarkably brave, especially considering her young age. She shows a deep concern for Pokémon, particularly those that have been harmed or manipulated, which motivates her to help Wes recover and purify Shadow Pokémon. Though she can come across as bossy, stubborn, or impatient, these traits stem from her determination and sense of responsibility rather than malice.

She is quick to trust Wes after he rescues her and openly accepts his troubled past, valuing his actions over his history. Rui often acts as the emotional anchor of the duo, encouraging Wes and helping to guide his decisions. Despite having no Pokémon of her own, she never hesitates to put herself in danger and plays a crucial role in the mission through her unique psychic ability to sense Shadow Pokémon.

== History ==

  • Pokémon Colosseum: Before the opening of Pokémon Colosseum, Rui was on her way to visit her grandfather, Eagun, in Agate Village. Passing through Pyrite Town's Duel Square, she noticed a strange, black aura surrounding a Pokémon that was later identified as a Shadow Pokémon. Once the Cipher Peons who owned the Shadow Pokémon realized that she could recognize and identify the altered Pokémon, they kidnapped her on the orders of Ein to prevent her from revealing Cipher's plans. After dragging her across the Orre desert to Phenac City, the thugs are eventually thwarted by the efforts of Wes and his Umbreon and Espeon. Grateful for the rescue, Rui has Wes help her talk to Mayor Es Cade about her kidnapping. Soon after this, Wes is confronted by three Team Snagem members, where Rui learns about Wes's past connection to them, as well as the existence of the Snag Machine Wes stole from them. After Wes drives them away, she tells Wes how she doesn't mind his past because she is grateful for how he rescued her. She then tells Wes that the Snag Machine has given her an idea. Shortly after obtaining Poké Balls and encountering their first Shadow Pokémon together, Rui tells Wes her idea for him to use the Snag Machine to take back these Pokémon, which introduces the snagging mechanic of the game. After this, Rui is determined to help Wes get to the bottom of the conspiracy developing in the desert, and she follows behind Wes throughout the rest of the game. Rui supports Wes in his quest to defeat Cipher and Team Snagem by identifying Shadow Pokémon for Wes. Although Shadow Pokémon are usually indistinguishable from the regular kind to normal people, Rui can sense the black aura surrounding them (although the reason why she can see this aura is never explained). Using this ability, Rui can identify Shadow Pokémon so that Wes can snag and eventually purify them.
  • Pokémon XD: In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, which takes place five years after Colosseum, Rui is mentioned several times by the people of Orre. However, she is not actually seen, nor is she mentioned by name.

== Trivia ==

  • If Wes attempts to use a Poké Ball on a non-Shadow Pokémon, Rui cries out, "No, wait! That POKéMON doesn't have a black aura!" This essentially prevents Wes from being able to snag non-Shadow Pokémon, since his version of the Snag Machine does not restrict him from snagging non-Shadow Pokémon, unlike Michael's in Pokémon XD, which is tied to the Aura Reader to prevent its misuse. This creates a couple of oddities, however: Even after Wes and Rui learn the term "Shadow Pokémon," Rui still uses the above line, even though she could refer to it as a Shadow Pokémon (and even does so in dialogue during the story). This message pops up even when Rui is not with Wes when he attempts to snag a non-Shadow Pokémon, such as during the Mt. Battle 100-battle challenge.
  • Although a romantic relationship is never confirmed in-game or in its sequel, many characters remark on how Wes and Rui "make a good-looking couple" and other similar comments.
  • In the international localizations of Pokémon Colosseum, her shirt and skirt were lengthened. Additionally, the belt on her skirt, her boots, and her shirt are paler in localizations.
  • She's from the Orre region.
  • Her relatives include Eagun and Beluh, who are her grandparents.
