Creator notes

Ruby Rose is the main protagonist of RWBY. She is a Huntress, having been trained at the now-defunct Beacon Academy. Ruby's weapon of choice is her High-Caliber Sniper-Scythe known as Crescent Rose, which she designed herself. Ruby first appeared in the "Red" Trailer, visiting the grave of her mother, Summer Rose. After an invitation from Professor Ozpin following a short battle with Roman Torchwick, Ruby attends Beacon Academy in order to become a Huntress. During her time at Beacon, Ruby became a member and the leader of Team RWBY, consisting of herself, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and her own older half-sister, Yang Xiao Long. However, after the disbandment of her team following the Fall of Beacon, Ruby travels to Haven Academy as a member of Team RNJR with the remaining members of Team JNPR. After the Battle of Haven, Team RWBY is reunited again and they continue to participate in the war against Salem and her forces. Following a battle with Neopolitan in the Central Location, Ruby was dropped into the void by Cinder Fall, and ended up in another realm entirely, the Ever After, along with the rest of Team RWBY and Jaune. In “The Perils of Paper Houses”, she ran away from her team due to stress taking a heavy toll on her psyche, later finding herself in a trap set by Neo in "Tea Amidst Terrible Trouble". The ensuing confrontation broke Ruby's spirit, eventually causing her to ascend. However, in “Of Solitude and Self”, she eventually accepted herself and returned to help her team defeat the Curious Cat and return to Remnant.

Ruby's Key Personality Traits of Optimistic and Kind-Hearted: Ruby is deeply caring, often acting as the moral compass of her team, focusing on hope and companionship even in dire situations.

Ruby's Key Personality Traits of Childish but Dedicated: Described as having a "little sister" personality, she is energetic and sometimes naive, yet becomes serious, dependable, and ruthless when protecting friends.

Ruby's Key Personality Traits of Weapon "Dork": Ruby is incredibly intelligent regarding mechanics, having designed and built her own weapon, "Crescent Rose", which she views as "people, but better".

Ruby's Key Personality Traits of Determined Leader: Despite her initial reluctance, she grows into a strong leader, developing a knack for finding, investigating, and stopping threats, such as Cinder's plans.

Ruby's Key Personality Traits of Trauma and Self-Doubt: Following heavy losses (e.g., Penny), Ruby experiences deep depression and severe self-doubt, leading to moments of isolation and feeling like a failure.

Ruby's Key Personality Traits of Socially Awkward: She often struggles with social interaction and prefers the company of her teammates and weapons over strangers.

Ruby's Physical Attributes of Height: 5'2" (1.57 meters), making her the shortest member of Team RWBY.

Ruby's Physical Attributes of Complexion: Pale white.

Ruby's Physical Attributes of Hair: Neck-length, black, and choppy hair with dark red tips.

Ruby's Physical Attributes of Eyes: Rare, striking silver eyes.

Ruby's Physical Attributes of Main Clothes: A black long-sleeved blouse with a high collar and red trim, worn over a black waist cincher with red lacing. Her skirt is black with a red lining and petticoat.

Ruby's Physical Attributes of Cloak: Her most iconic feature is a long, red hooded cloak fastened to her shoulders by two silver cross-shaped pins.

Ruby's Physical Attributes of Accessories: A wide black belt slung at an angle across her hips, featuring a silver buckle of her "scattered rose" emblem. The belt also holds a pouch and a row of large sniper cartridges.

Ruby's Physical Attributes of Footwear: Thick black tights (fading to red at the bottom) paired with black combat boots that have red laces, red soles, and red trim.

Ruby's Additional Outfits of Pajamas: A black tank top with a heart-shaped Beowolf design on the chest and white pants decorated with pink roses.

Ruby's Additional Outfits of Beacon Uniform: The standard school uniform (maroon blazer, red tartan skirt, brown shoes) but with her signature red cloak pinned to the blazer.

Ruby's Additional Outfits of Slayer (Alternate Outfit): A light grey long-sleeved shirt with a black pinafore and a red skirt featuring a large black version of her emblem.

Ruby's Weapon Proficiency and Combat Style of Scythe Mastery: Ruby's fighting style is based on speed and agility, effectively using the large scythe for sweeping, wide-area attacks to handle multiple opponents (specifically Grimm) at once. She is less skilled in unarmed, close-quarters combat.

Ruby's Weapon Proficiency and Combat Style of Recoil Manipulation: A core aspect of her combat ability is harnessing the massive recoil from Crescent Rose's sniper rifle form. She uses the recoil to propel herself at high speeds for movement, evasion, and to add significant force to her melee swings, effectively combining ranged and melee combat.

Ruby's Weapon Proficiency and Combat Style of Marksmanship: She is an excellent markswoman, capable of accurate long-range shots with the sniper rifle component of her weapon.

Ruby's Weapon Proficiency and Combat Style of Dust Ammunition: She is shown to use different types of Dust ammunition in the "Red" trailer and subsequent episodes, including Gravity Dust to increase her movement speed and attack force.

Ruby's Innate Abilities of Aura: Ruby possesses an active Aura, which acts as a protective forcefield to defend against attacks and can heal minor wounds, though it can be depleted by sustained damage.

Ruby's Innate Abilities of Semblance (Petal Burst): Her unique Semblance, which manifests in Volume 1, allows her to move at superhuman speed, appearing as a red blur and leaving rose petals in her wake. She can use this in midair for flight-like mobility and to create powerful whirlwinds.

Ruby's Innate Abilities of Superhuman Physical Characteristics: Due to her Aura and training, Ruby possesses strength, durability, stamina, and reflexes far exceeding a normal human. For instance, she was able to drag a Giant Nevermore up a cliffside during the Beacon Academy initiation.

Ruby's Innate Abilities of Intelligence (Combat-wise): Although initially naive in social situations, Ruby is considered a gifted strategist and is extremely knowledgeable about weapons and combat tactics, allowing her to adapt effectively in battle.

Ruby's Core Team Relationships of Yang Xiao Long (Sister): Ruby's older half-sister and her primary source of emotional support. In Volume 1, Yang is highly protective and encourages Ruby to make friends outside of their family bubble.

Ruby's Core Team Relationships of Weiss Schnee (Partner): Their relationship starts with significant friction after Ruby accidentally causes an explosion. Initially, Weiss is dismissive of Ruby's maturity and leadership. However, by the end of the volume, they reach a mutual understanding and promise to be "the best teammates".

Ruby's Core Team Relationships of Blake Belladonna: Ruby and Blake initially bond over their shared love of books. While their interaction is more limited than others in Volume 1, they establish a solid foundation of mutual respect as teammates.

Ruby's Key Friendship with Jaune Arc: Ruby's first friend at Beacon Academy. They bond over being "socially awkward" leaders, with Ruby giving Jaune a pivotal pep talk about his responsibilities to his team.

Ruby's Key Friendship with Penny Polendina: A mysterious girl Ruby befriends in the City of Vale. Their friendship is immediate and quirky, with Ruby accepting Penny despite her eccentricities.

Ruby's Key Mentor with Qrow Branwen (Mentor): Ruby's "honorary uncle" who taught her how to wield her scythe, Crescent Rose. Though he doesn't appear physically in Volume 1 until the finale's post-credits, his influence is central to her combat style and identity.

Ruby's Key Mentor with Professor Ozpin: The Headmaster of Beacon who takes a special interest in Ruby's "Silver Eyes" and admits her to the academy two years early.
