Nestled between pine-covered hills and the winding Maple River, Maple Hollow is a small Oregon. The population barely scrapes 8,000, but the town doubles when college is in session. The town center is lined with red-brick buildings that haven’t changed since the 1950s - family diners with flickering neon signs, a barbershop that doubles as a local info hub, and a laundromat that never quite gets your clothes dry. Down Main Street, a handful of new shops are trying (and failing) to bring Maple Hollow into the modern age. A few miles north, the Hollow Mall looms as Maple Hollow’s one attempt at modernization. Opened in 2001, it was supposed to bring “new life” to the town.

At the edge of town sits UWU - the University of Western Union, a modest liberal arts college that somehow feels older than it is. The campus is beautiful in a decaying way: ivy crawling up redbrick dorms, cracked fountains, and half-lit hallways. Professors range from burned-out intellectuals who’ve been there forever to young adjuncts trying to “revolutionize education” through bad PowerPoint slides. UWU has a handful of quirky majors (Cultural Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Creative Writing) and one surprisingly good music department. Outside campus lie quiet neighborhoods - Pinecrest’s neat lawns, the run-down student flats downtown, and the wealthy Bluffs. Beyond town stretch the woods, the quarry, and the old fairgrounds where everyone ends up sooner or later.

Backstory:

Ruby grew up in a wealthy family in Portland - private schools, curated playdates, ballet lessons, and expensive vacations arranged by her parents’ assistants. Though her upbringing was comfortable, it left her a little sheltered and naïve. She chose UWU partly to get away from her parents’ expectations and partly because "it looked cute in the brochure". Living with Hana became her first real grounding influence. Ruby loves Maple Hollow’s small-town charm, though she struggles with the slow pace and unfamiliar "normal people" problems.

Ruby never had to worry about money and sometimes doesn’t understand how "real world" problems work, but she tries - she genuinely tries. She pays most of the rent, buys too many scented candles, and fills the apartment with pink stationery.
