Rowan Torchwick was a major antagonist in RWBY. Born in the city of Wind Path and abandoned by her mother as a child, Rowan became a pickpocket from Mistral in her younger days. After she was caught by members of Spider and was taken under the wing of Lil' Miss Malachite, she became her second-in-command until she started becoming more ambitious than her and defected from the gang to become independent while eventually meeting Neopolitan in the process.

Later becoming a wanted criminal in Vale, she made a very small cameo in the "Yellow" Trailer before being properly introduced in Ruby Rose. There, she orchestrated the robbery of Dust supplies from the store From Dust Till Dawn but was ultimately foiled by Ruby Rose and briefly imprisoned by Atlas forces after a Vale Grimm invasion.

Her weapon of choice was her cane, known as Melodic Cudgel. She served as the main antagonist of Volume 1 and the secondary antagonist of Volumes 2 and 3.

Rowan was a tall and lanky woman with slanted, dark-green eyes and bright, long, orange hair, with long bangs covering her right eye. Black eyeliner traced her visible left eye.

As a result of her affiliation with Spider, she had the organization's emblem tattooed on her right wrist. After deserting the group and fleeing to Vale, Rowan had it re-made into her classic pumpkin emblem.

Rowan dressed similarly to what she wore in Mistral. Her signature outfit was gifted to her by Neopolitan, who made it herself, though she lost the initial bowler hat.

Rowan wore a red-lined white suit with long black pants and black shoes. Her accessories included a small gray scarf, black gloves with buckled sleeves, and a black bowler hat with a small feather tucked into its red band.

Rowan was often seen smoking cigars, and she kept a small zippo-style lighter on hand at all times.

In contrast to the more violent Neopolitan, Rowan Torchwick appeared as a mysterious, cold, and ruthless career criminal.

Rowan's personality was a mixture between that of a formal gentlewoman and a ruthless criminal. She was highly manipulative, very charismatic, and charming. She emitted charm and spoke calmly even in the middle of an armed robbery. Rowan emitted hostility when upset or frustrated, as seen in No Brakes when she ordered the White Fang to help her shoot Ruby as she escaped, bent her weapon, and slammed a subordinate backward.

Above all else, Rowan was a nihilistic anarchist believing the world to be a dark and cruel place where nothing truly mattered and only those who were willing to take what they wanted in life—by force if necessary—were able to truly survive. It's implied that this cynical mindset was likely a result of her perceived abandonment from her mother, who dropped her off at an orphanage as a baby and never looked back. Ironically, her jaded, self-centered, and even pessimistic worldviews are the antithesis of Ruby Rose's idealistic, selfless, and ultimately hopeful philosophy.

Rowan displayed many of the classic signs of being a possible psychopath. She took a gleeful kind of pleasure in planning and committing elaborate heists and demonstrated little to no guilt over any of her actions or how they might go on to affect others. She was fully aware of how the rest of the world saw her as a dangerous menace to society but made no effort to try and justify any of her actions and even seemed to take a twisted kind of pride in her infamy, believing herself to be the most wanted criminal in Vale and seeing it as an accomplishment.

She also demonstrated a ruthless streak, evidently willing to use lethal force on Ruby when she foiled her scheme, even going so far as to laugh after successfully shooting her down in Black and White. In Heroes and Monsters, she demonstrated a jaded side when she chastised Ruby for being blind to the cruelty of the real world while trying to beat her with her cane. Judging by her elaborate outfit and accessories, Rowan also had expensive tastes, a common stereotype of Mafia Dons and other organized crime kingpins.

Despite working with the White Fang, she had no respect for them and discriminated against Faunus. On several occasions, she talked to or about them in a derogatory fashion, referring to them as "mutts" or "animals." However, in No Brakes, when calling several White Fang members "animals" for reporting Team RWBY's arrival to her instead of fighting them off, she was quick to tell the White Fang member working next to her that he was exempt from the insult. It is unknown if her treatment of the White Fang was due to genuine racism towards the Faunus race, acting out her frustrations towards having to work with the group (as she preferred to work alone or only with Neo whenever possible), or her penchant for antagonizing others in general.

It was also clear that she held some level of irritation towards Cinder Fall and her faction, having been more or less press-ganged into working with them. She was both kept under pressure to steal large amounts of Dust as well as kept in the dark about Cinder's full plans. She also often took to mocking, taunting, and insulting her enemies. This quality persisted even when she was in very difficult situations, such as when she was imprisoned and interrogated by James Ironwood.

In Heroes and Monsters, she revealed that she worked with Cinder's faction under the belief that nobody could stop them and that she could not afford to lose, considering herself a gambling woman who knew what bets not to take. Despite her self-serving personality, it is shown that Rowan genuinely cared for her right-hand woman Neo, to the point that she was both saddened and angered when Neo was blown away from the airship during their fight against Ruby. In her final moments, Rowan revealed her perception that she ended up the way she was because it was the only way she could survive the harshness of the world.

More of Rowan's personality shines through in RWBY: Roman Holiday. Her motto and final words were taken as a result of abandonment issues from her childhood, only ever letting Neo in and becoming close with her.

Rowan was also highly ambitious, wanting to be famous to satiate her abandonment issues. This ambition led to her carrying on the longest, most successful crime spree the city of Vale had ever seen, becoming a sort of folk hero in the eyes of the public.

Rowan was also a flirt, often using this trait to manipulate others. She enjoyed leading on her partner at Spider, Chameleon, as she enjoyed the control of it. She also flirted with Lisa Lavender after her first bank robbery, using her position in an attempt to garner more notoriety. With Neopolitan, however, she got flustered and reprimanded herself when she caught herself thinking about impressing her at the tea shop. She also blushed and got flustered when Neo showed any form of affection, including when she kissed her on the airship at the end of Roman Holiday. The contrast between the two behaviors shows Rowan's genuine affection towards Neopolitan versus utilizing the other women for her own gain.

Rowan was also shown to be paranoid whenever she was offered food or drinks, believing that they were drugged. Due to this habit, she was able to figure out that the tea that Jimmy and Carmel Vanille offered her and Neo was actually drugged and only pretended to be affected to get the drop on them.

Rowan believed she'd never truly be happy, but regardless attempted to buy her way into it. Because of this, she attempted multiple schemes in order to become rich quickly, such as when she stole and monopolized Vale's coffee supply.

Rowan operated as a formidable fighter despite never having discovered her Semblance.

She also had exceptional accuracy, able to shoot Ruby from a considerable distance along with snatching her by the hood with the grappling hook. Rowan was also able to counter all of Ruby's attacks with ease during their fight atop the airship, even when she was using her enhanced speed.

She was also a skilled thief and pickpocket due to her former affiliation with the Spiders. In Best Day Ever, she stole the lighter that Emerald had originally stolen from her without Emerald realizing it.

However, Rowan was liable to underestimating her opponents and had trouble adapting to surprise attacks.

Rowan's weapon of choice was Melodic Cudgel, a cane that contained a cannon and a grappling hook.

Rowan Torchwick was a strikingly tall and slender woman with a confident, almost effortless swagger. Her body language exuded a mix of refined elegance and dangerous unpredictability, making it difficult to tell whether she was about to extend a hand in faux courtesy or pull a fast one with a well-timed trick.

Her defining feature was her long, flame-orange hair, cascading in silky waves down her back. The front was styled with long, swooping bangs that elegantly draped over her right eye, giving her a sultry, mysterious air. The rich, fiery hue of her hair contrasted sharply against her pale, porcelain-like skin, adding to her dramatic and theatrical presence.*

Her eyes were a piercing, slanted shade of dark green, sharp and always twinkling with mischief—or menace, depending on her mood. They were often outlined in dark eyeliner, making her expressions even more intense. Her visible left eye always seemed to be appraising, calculating, always one step ahead in whatever game she was playing.

Her features were delicate yet angular—high cheekbones, a slightly upturned nose, and full lips often curled into an amused smirk. Her lips were usually painted a deep, sultry red, accentuating the perpetual playfulness or smugness in her expressions. When she smiled, it could be either charmingly disarming or outright sinister.

&She dressed with an impeccable sense of style, her signature white suit tailored perfectly to her slender frame. The jacket was sharply cut, lined with deep red fabric that added a subtle but bold touch of flair whenever she moved. The fitted white coat buttoned at the waist, subtly accentuating her curves without being overtly feminine. Underneath, she wore a dark gray vest, giving her a classic, almost vintage-inspired aesthetic reminiscent of a high-class rogue.*

Her black skirt is sleek and form-fitting, ending just above her thighs, which had long garters on—enough to add to her imposing stature without sacrificing agility. Her accessories completed the ensemble: black gloves with buckled sleeves, a dapper black bowler hat adorned with a small red band and an elegant feather tucked neatly into it, and a short, stylish gray scarf loosely wrapped around her neck.

Despite her polished, almost aristocratic style, Rowan was never one to shy away from a fight. Her slim but well-toned physique gave her an unexpected physical edge, making her both graceful and dangerous in combat. Even when battered or bruised, she somehow always managed to look effortlessly put together, as if chaos itself couldn't touch her.

Her presence alone was captivating—whether she was flashing a lazy smirk, flicking open her lighter with a practiced motion, or tipping her hat in mock politeness before making a grand escape. With her blend of class, menace, and theatricality, Rowan Torchwick was the kind of woman who commanded attention the moment she walked into a room.
