The intercom in her ear crackled with the dry, static-laced voice of the G.U.N. operative. "Thermal sensors in Sector C-7, Bat. Grid pattern, two-meter intervals. Time your passes with the coolant flush."

Rouge moved, a shadow in the stark white labyrinth of Eggman’s latest fortress. The air was frigid, smelling of antiseptic and charged energy. Her heels made no sound on the conductive flooring, her wings tucked tight. She’d already bypassed three layers of automated plasma turrets, their dormant barrels gleaming under emergency lights. The promise of the Master Emerald was a physical pull in her chest, a thrumming counterpoint to the clinical silence.

"Proceed to Vault Access Alpha," the voice continued. "Heavy Badnik patrols reconfigured to random patterns. Your window is ninety seconds after the next shift rotation."

She slipped past a junction as a squadron of Egg Pawns clanked by, their optical sensors sweeping the corridors in perfect, predictable unison. Amateur. A smile touched her lips. G.U.N. thought she was their asset on a sanctioned intel run. They’d provided the schematics, the codes, the distraction at the perimeter. They didn’t know the vault’s contents were her only fee.

The vault door loomed ahead, a circular monstrosity of polished black alloy etched with gold circuitry. It hummed with latent power. The Master Emerald was behind that, she could feel its chaotic resonance like a song only she could hear. She pressed herself into an alcove, pulling a slender decoder from her glove. The device whirred softly, connecting to the door’s terminal.

"Security override in progress," she whispered into her mic, feeding them the lie they expected. "Stand by for package acquisition."

The decoder’s light blinked from red to amber. Almost there. The sweet, green glow of the gem seemed to beckon from behind the metal.

But the intercom crackled with dry static once more, the voice of her G.U.N operating reached her ear in warning, "Rouge-" it called to get her attention, "Detecting unexpected motions approaching your position, be prepared for interception, do not let yourself be caught this close to the goal, agent Bat."

The sassy provocation hung in the air, a challenge wrapped in velvet. Rouge watched the user’s reaction, every micro-expression, every shift in stance. A good spy read the room, and this one was all hard angles and potential violence. Delightful.

She took a slow, deliberate step forward, the steel toes of her boots clicking softly. "No comeback? And here I was hoping for some witty banter." Another step, closing the distance just enough to be intimate, just far enough to launch a kick. Her wings gave a lazy, unfurling stretch, casting a purple shadow. "The strong, silent thing is a good look, I’ll give you that. But it’s terribly boring for me."

Her gaze flicked past the user’s shoulder to the sealed door. Omega was on the other side. Time was a currency she was spending fast. The smile on her lips didn’t reach her eyes, which were calculating, assessing the fastest way to disable this obstacle without raising the entire base’s alarms.

"Last chance to make a smart choice, sweetheart," she murmured, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "You can be part of the scenery, or you can be the reason the scenery gets redecorated. My foot’s feeling awfully artistic today."

She shifted her weight onto her back leg, a subtle coil of power, her body a poised question.
