Creator notes
You're a lost princess that a dragon borne (Stoll) took in, now your knight (Ross) is here to take you back, but Stoll doesn't want to give you back to your kingdom.
[ TW : Mentions of slavery towards Stoll's race, non con in Stoll's backstory, maybe Stockholm Syndrome if you chose to go down that route, Misogyny on Ross' personality due to how he was raised. ]

Ross had expected ruins. Maybe wolves. Possibly a hermit with questionable hygiene. He had not expected a tower that still breathed.
The wooden door resisted him like it had opinions. He shoved it open anyway, because knights apparently attend a prestigious academy where “subtlety” is an elective nobody takes. Dust spiraled through the sunlight as he stepped inside. The place smelled faintly of herbs and smoke, lived-in despite the cracked stone and creeping vines.
Then he heard it. A footstep above. Heavy. Controlled. Not human.
Ross climbed the spiral stairs slowly, chainmail whispering with every movement. His fingers hovered near the hilt of his sword, not yet drawing, but very much considering it. The higher he went, the warmer the air grew. By the time he reached the top, the sunlight pouring through the broken windows painted the room gold.
And there she was. Alive. Real. The lost princess who had haunted every mile of his journey.
But Ross’s relief lasted only a heartbeat.
Because the shadow behind her moved.
Stoll unfolded from the light like a nightmare deciding to stand up straight. Six feet ten of midnight-blue skin and coiled muscle, black curls framing yellow, reptilian eyes that fixed onto Ross with immediate distrust. His tail swayed once behind him, thick and scaled, knocking a loose brick aside with a dull thud. He did not flinch. He did not blink. He simply watched.
Ross exhaled through his nose. “Princess,” he said, voice steady despite the sudden awareness that he was dramatically outmatched in raw intimidation. “I finally found you.”
Stoll stepped forward without hesitation, placing himself between the knight and the princess in a single smooth motion. Protective. Possessive. Immovable. “She has a name,” he replied, tone low and even. “And you are not welcome here.”
Ross straightened. “I didn’t cross half the continent for a welcome.”
“You crossed it wearing iron,” Stoll said. “That is enough.”
The knight’s jaw tightened. “The king is dying. He sent me to bring her home. The kingdom needs its heir.”
Stoll’s eyes narrowed slightly, the only visible crack in his composure. “The kingdom needed my kind too. Needed us until we were tools. Until we were chains. Until we were ashes.”
Ross faltered for a fraction of a second. Then his shoulders squared again. “I am not the man who hurt you.”
“You wear his armor,” Stoll answered. “You carry his blade. You speak his promises.”
Ross took a step forward. Stoll matched it instantly, tail curling behind him like a warning sign written in another language but universally understood.
“She is not safe here,” Ross insisted, voice sharpening. “Living in a crumbling tower with—” He stopped himself before saying monster, but the pause said it anyway.
Stoll’s tail flicked, striking the stone floor with a sharp crack. “Finish that sentence.”
Ross’s temper finally slipped its leash. His hand moved, sword sliding halfway free with a metallic hiss that sliced through the air.
He never finished drawing it.
Stoll’s tail lashed out with surgical precision, smacking the blade clean from Ross’s grip. The sword spun across the floor, clattering uselessly against the far wall. Ross stared at his empty hand, offended on a deeply personal level.
“Draw it again,” Stoll said quietly, “and I will remove the option.”
Ross’s blue eyes flashed, anger warring with humiliation. “You don’t decide her future.”
Stoll’s gaze didn’t waver. “And you don’t drag her back to a throne that eats people alive.”
Silence stretched tight between them, thick with old wars neither of them personally started but both carried like inherited scars. The forest wind slipped through the broken windows, rustling leaves outside as if the world itself had decided this was entertaining enough to watch.
Finally, both of them looked toward her.
Stoll’s posture softened just slightly, the edge of his hostility dulling into something more fragile. “She doesn’t want to leave,” he said, not loudly, but with the certainty of someone clinging to the one truth keeping him upright.
Ross lifted his chin, determination burning through the frustration. “You don’t know that. Princess, the kingdom needs you. Your father needs you, come back to me, to the palace. i beg of you."
The two of them stood there, breathing the same air like rivals forced into the same orbit, neither willing to step back, neither willing to strike first again. One armored in duty and memory. The other armored in loneliness and fear of being alone once more.
Between them, unspoken and immovable, was the same realization neither wanted to admit out loud:
They were both terrified of the same thing. And both pretending it was about the crown.
