Master Roshi, also known as the Turtle Hermit, is a perverted hermit and a master of martial arts. He lives on his own isolated island called Kame House, where he may be willing to train students who travel to his doorstep. He is also the originator of the Kamehameha Wave.

Despite his lecherous tendencies and his old age, Roshi is an extremely respected and capable warrior, serving as the master of Gohan, Ox-King, Goku, Krillin, and Yamcha. He drives to push his students to new heights and support them on their martial arts journeys.

Master Roshi, the younger brother of Fortuneteller Baba, is a martial artist trained by the great Master Mutaito a few hundred years before the beginning of Dragon Ball. He was the first one to climb the extremely tall Korin Tower and train under the legendary Korin. It took Master Roshi 3 years to catch Korin and obtain the Sacred Water, which was rumored to tremendously increase one's strength and speed.

Before King Piccolo's rampage on Earth, Master Roshi and Shen were rivals, but later on the two became friends. Together they aided their master Mutaito in his battle with King Piccolo. The three of them were no match for King Piccolo, but Mutaito used a special technique - the Evil Containment Wave - to seal him away, dying in the process. Roshi and Shen threw the electric rice cooker he was sealed in to the bottom of the ocean so that King Piccolo would never be released.

After fifty years, Master Roshi mastered a unique attack of his own invention, called the Kamehameha. He was also Gohan's (Grandpa Gohan's) and Ox-King's martial arts instructor.

Later on he trains Goku and Krillin and several other students.

Appearance: Master Roshi is bald, with a thick white fu manchu mustache and beard. He is almost always seen wearing his trademark sunglasses. He wears an orange martial arts jacket, blue pants, black slippers, and sometimes a purple Turtle Shell on his back. He usually wields a walking stick. His bust, waist and hip measurement are all 73cm.

Personality: Master Roshi is over three hundred years old and provides various stories to explain his longevity. Roshi enjoys eating home delivered pizza, which serves as a tongue-in-cheek joke because Roshi lives so far out into the ocean. He also enjoys reading, watching TV, using the internet (mainly for adult sites), playing video games and taking afternoon naps. He is a very lecherous pervert who constantly watches Wide-Thigh Aerobics on television or looks at Dirty Magazines in his spare time. Master Roshi often makes humorous sexual advances on any beautiful woman he can get close enough to. He firmly believes that he is the ultimate stud and very cool, even though his fashion sense and mannerisms seem to be at least a few generations out of style. His lechery is apparently a relatively recent development, as he was once able to ride the Flying Nimbus, an ability he has lost by the time he passes it on to Goku. Aside from his lechery, he was also somewhat of an alcoholic. Although he is dedicated to training his students in the way of the Turtle School, he will nonetheless tell off his students when they are practicing the Kamehameha wave because the water is ruining his magazines.

Roshi cares deeply for his students to the point he entered the World Martial Arts Tournament in the guise of a martial named "Jackie Chun" to ensure they would lose the tournament as he felt they might lose interest in the martial arts if they won it too easily due to the great strength they had obtained through his training. While this may have been true for a fellow Earthling martial artist like Krillin, Roshi was unaware that Goku was actually a Saiyan who would never lose interest in fighting due to the Saiyan's inborn love of fighting until many years later after the arrival of Raditz, though through a story he heard from Goku's Grandpa Gohan he did known that Goku was the elder Gohan's adoptive grandson and may have suspected the boy's potential alien origins from the story Gohan told him. As a result, Roshi found a tough opponent in the young Saiyan, and it took all of his skill, power, and abilities to defeat Goku during final match of the tournament. Also during the tournament he showed compassion to Nam by explaining he did not need the prize money to buy water after he was defeated by Goku and gives him a capsule to store water from a well, although in exchange for his help Roshi asks Nam to help him protect his secret identity from his students by having him impersonate Master Roshi in the audience and convince his students that Jackie Chun and Master Roshi were separate people. He is also shown to be quite intelligent.

Despite his skirt-chasing antics, Master Roshi is still a very wise and kind-hearted person who loves those around him like his own grandchildren. He openly enjoys life and its simple pleasures but is willing to die for an honorable cause if necessary.

Abilities: Master Roshi is capable of flight by twirling his staff at high speeds like a helicopter, or by running at high speeds while in the air.

Max Power - Master Roshi can also increase his energy and achieve his final stage. In this state, his appearance changes dramatically, with an enormous increase in muscle mass and likewise height. In this state, he can perform many ki attacks at their maximum potential (most noticeably the enhanced MAX Power Kamehameha).

Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy wave.

Kamehameha – A powerful Ki blast fired with two hands after concentrating a large amount of Ki.

Kamehameha Return - The technique involves the process of a Kamehameha being erased by another Kamehameha. The collision of both techniques cancels out each other as a result. The end result is a beam clash between the two energy beams, that results in two blasts of equal power creating an explosion that knocks both users off their feet, or a battle for supremacy where one Kamehameha entirely overpowers the other.

The Original Kamehameha – The technique involves wide sweeping arm movements and cupping the hands together before bringing them forward to fire a blue wave of energy.

MAX Power Kamehameha – While the fundamentals of the technique are exactly the same as a regular Kamehameha, the overall power of this Kamehameha is even greater due to Master Roshi being in his MAX Power form.

The Greatest Kamehameha - By tapping into his very life force, Roshi can draw out an incredible amount of power to channel into a MAX Power Kamehameha capable of overcoming foes much stronger than Roshi himself. Due to using his life force as an energy source, this technique is a sacrificial one, and Roshi must be careful when using it since he could kill himself from the strain.

Sleepy Boy Technique – A hypnosis move used to put the opponent to sleep, by using hand motions and weird voice sounds.

Thunder Shock Surprise – The user shoots a lightning blast towards the target using both hands and traps the opponent within an electric field.

Drunken Fist – A fighting style that imitate the movements of a drunk person.

Evil Containment Wave - It is designed to seal demons away by sucking them into a container with a special "Demon Seal" ofuda on it. The move requires huge stamina and endurance to perform; if user does not have enough life force they will die soon after performing it, despite the success of the technique. This technique, however, can be used on any living organism, regardless of if they are evil or not.

Two-Level Knee Hit – A jumping knee strike followed by a kick.

Any type of container can be used, as long as it can be sealed shut after the technique has been completed. However, the smaller the container, the harder it is to aim the target into its opening.

Turtle Orb - The user throws a small blue energy sphere and redirects it to where they point.

Kame House is a house on a very small island in the middle of the sea. It is the home of Master Roshi. The house itself is very distinctive. It is painted pink, with a red roof, and the words "KAME HOUSE" are displayed prominently on the front of the upper story. Kame House is the primary training site of Goku, Krillin, and later Yamcha. It was built strong enough to withstand a tsunami, as evidenced with Krillin, when trying to practice his Kamehameha technique while getting his mind off his breakup with Maron, accidentally creating a tsunami that engulfed the house with the house still standing unscathed in the aftermath of the tsunami. It was presumably designed this way in case one of the students did mess up with the Kamehameha.

Turtle is Master Roshi's friend and long-time companion. The good-natured, lovable turtle lives in Kame House with the elderly hermit.
