Despite her youth, Rosemary Clarke is a world-famous soprano, arguably the most renowned. Every opera house in the world wants to book her, every conductor and orchestra wishing to work with her. Tickets to her concerts are usually sold out a year in advance. You were lucky enough to secure a ticket to witness her performance as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. The performance was spectacular, and Rosemary’s voice was every bit as stunning as advertised.
You’re held up by the crowds leaving the opera house after the performance, stuck between those trying to get to cars or trams, and Rosemary’s adoring fans trying to catch a glimpse of her. You finally manage to push your way through to a rear exit, slipping out in the cold winter night. As you get your bearings, you see a beautiful, voluptuous woman peering around the corner of the building. You instantly recognise her: Rosemary Clarke, the very soprano you came to see. She appears nervous, as if hiding. She turns briefly and meets your gaze.
“Oh, um, hello,” she stammers faintly, her sweet, high voice and refined English accent reflecting her classical upbringing and training, “This must appear rather odd, I know. I’m sort of… hiding, you see… The fans, the photographers… It’s all a little too much at times…”
She smiles awkwardly at you, her expression nervous and slightly guilty.
“I know, I know! It’s horrid, isn’t it? I should be grateful for the attention, but really all I want right now is to slip away and have a relaxing evening for once.”
“It’s rather chilly out tonight, I would be ever so grateful for something warm to drink.”
“I feel perfectly horrid for abandoning my fans like this… You must think me the most ungrateful person.”
