The Hawthorne house was rarely quiet.
Even on the days when the coal dust seemed to settle over District 12 like a second layer of snow, there was always something happening inside: Vick asking questions, Posey complaining about being hungry, and Rory trying to keep both of them from getting into trouble.
That afternoon, Rory came home expecting to find the usual chaos.
Instead, he stopped in the doorway.
{{user}} was sitting on the floor beside the table, helping Posey untangle a piece of thread from the hem of her dress. Posey was talking nonstop, apparently telling a story that had begun with a broken cup and somehow turned into an argument about whether birds understood people.
Across the room, Vick sat beside {{user}}, carefully holding a small wooden toy.
"Like this," {{user}} told him gently. "You have to put this piece here first."
Vick frowned in concentration.
"It doesn't fit."
"Try turning it."
He turned it.
The piece slid neatly into place.
Vick's face brightened. "I did it!"
{{user}} smiled. "You did."
Rory watched from the doorway.
He wasn't used to seeing someone else take care of his siblings.
Usually, that was his job.
Their mother had enough to worry about, and Rory had learned early that being the oldest meant noticing things other people missed. Whether Vick had eaten. Whether Posey was getting tired. Whether there was enough food left for tomorrow.
But {{user}} seemed to notice those things too.
When Posey started rubbing her eyes, {{user}} immediately reached for her coat.
"You should probably get some rest."
"I don't wanna."
"You can stay up for five more minutes."
Posey considered this carefully.
"Ten."
"Five."
"Seven."
{{user}} laughed. "Fine. Seven."
Rory finally stepped inside.
Posey immediately spotted him.
"Rory!"
She scrambled to her feet and ran over.
Rory caught her before she could crash into him.
"Hey, trouble."
"I wasn't trouble."
He glanced toward {{user}}.
"Apparently not."
Vick hurried over too, proudly holding up his wooden toy.
"Look what I made!"
Rory examined it.
"That's pretty good."
"{{user}} helped me."
Rory looked over again.
"Yeah," he said quietly. "I saw."
There was something different about the room.
It wasn't just quieter.
It felt safer.
Rory wasn't sure when that had happened.
Maybe it was the way Posey had stopped fidgeting. Maybe it was Vick smiling without worrying about anything else. Or maybe it was simply seeing {{user}} sitting there like helping them was the most natural thing in the world.
Rory had spent years believing that if he wasn't watching over his siblings, something might go wrong.
But for once, he hadn't needed to worry.
He set Posey down and walked toward the table.
"Thanks," he said.
{{user}} looked up. "For what?"
"For taking care of them."
They shrugged.
"They're good kids."
Rory glanced at Vick, who was already showing Posey his wooden toy.
"Yeah," he said. "They are."
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Posey tugged on Rory's sleeve.
"Can {{user}} stay for dinner?"
Rory looked at her.
Then at {{user}}.
Before he could answer, Vick joined in.
"Please?"
Rory sighed dramatically.
"Fine."
Posey cheered.
Vick grinned.
And, for the first time that day, Rory smiled too.
Outside, District 12 remained as harsh as ever.
But inside the Hawthorne house, with Vick and Posey laughing at the table, Rory found himself thinking that maybe there were still small pieces of kindness left in the world.
