Life aboard the Thousand Sunny had never been dull, but ever since Zoro and you had become a thing, things had taken a turn for the chaotic.
Though, admittedly, it was your fault for being so stubborn. Now, it wasn’t just you and Zoro. Oh no. There was Chopper, too.
Your little makeshift family.
It all started innocently enough. Zoro and you had spent more time together recently, your relationship growing from casual training sessions - where he’d completely obliterate you, of course - to quiet evenings on the deck, chatting about whatever random topics came up, like how Zoro could forget where he left his swords for the hundredth time.
It was cute. Really cute.
The trouble began one morning when Chopper - always the curious little reindeer - came running up to you with a very serious expression.
“{{user}}! I need your help!” he called out with wide, pleading eyes, practically tripping over his hooves. “Zoro said he didn’t want my help anymore when he was training with you, but I KNOW you need help with all those sword moves! You’re gonna hurt yourself if you don’t let me help!”
The little reindeer looked completely frantic, his antlers wobbling as he stood in front of you. You could feel a familiar, irritated presence creeping up behind you. Zoro had appeared, of course, in all his brooding glory, eyes half-lidded with that typical "don’t mess with me" look on his face.
“Stop making things up, Chopper,” Zoro grumbled as he crossed his arms. “You’re just trying to act all important again.”
Chopper was having none of it. “No way! You’re always too busy to help her, Zoro! Someone has to step in, and I’m the one who really knows what I’m doing!”
You could only watch as Zoro’s frustration grew with each word Chopper said. The little reindeer’s face was filled with determination as he continued on about how Zoro wasn’t really giving you proper training and how he, the expert doctor, could offer superior guidance with his tiny hooves and all.
Zoro just rolled his eyes, clearly thinking this whole thing was more trouble than it was worth. But of course, Chopper didn’t give up easily.
“Alright, alright, fine,” Zoro finally muttered with a sigh. “You wanna help her? Go ahead. I’ll just go find my swords or something...”
Chopper jumped in place with joy, totally ignoring Zoro’s sarcasm, and began eagerly pulling you towards a corner of the deck where you could practice without interrupting the rest of the crew’s activities. You followed along, already knowing this wouldn’t be as smooth as Chopper made it sound. Sure enough, Zoro had a front-row seat to the comedy that was about to unfold.
Chopper immediately began giving instructions like a seasoned teacher, gesturing wildly with his hooves, showing you the proper stance (which, of course, made no sense to you), and explaining - at length - how to hold a sword correctly. You tried to follow, but the moment your sword swung a little too hard, you ended up knocking over a barrel nearby. The crash echoed across the deck.
Zoro, who’d been watching the spectacle with half-lidded eyes, gave an exasperated sigh. “Unbelievable,” he muttered, pushing himself off the wall he’d been leaning against. He strolled over to where you and Chopper were, clearly expecting to find some disaster. “How do you even manage to knock over a barrel with a wooden sword?”
Chopper puffed out his chest proudly. “I’m teaching her how to really swing it properly! You know, with style-”
“Style? It’s a barrel you’re hitting, not a person!” Zoro interrupted, looking like he was fighting the urge to roll his eyes.
Chopper, undeterred, turned to you with a beaming smile. “See, Zoro? She’s already improving! You’ve just been too hard on her this whole time!”
Zoro crossed his arms, raising an eyebrow. “I’m the one who’s too hard on her? Look at her! She can barely swing the sword without breaking something!”
But even though he was mocking the situation, Zoro’s words didn’t seem to have the same edge they usually did. There was a soft glint of something like pride in his eyes - maybe he didn’t admit it aloud, but he was secretly glad to see how determined you were, even if you were terrible at sword fighting.
As you tried again, following Chopper’s highly detailed instructions (which seemed to change every two seconds), Zoro casually leaned against the railing, watching the chaos unfold with a smirk that barely hid his amusement. It was moments like this - messy, loud, and far from perfect - that Zoro secretly appreciated.
You and Chopper may not have been his first choice for training partners, but watching you two try was something else entirely.
At some point during the lesson (which by now had turned into an impromptu comedy routine), you accidentally sliced through a flag that was hanging nearby. The flag fluttered dramatically to the ground, and Zoro couldn’t help but snicker.
“Well, at least you’re doing something,” Zoro muttered, eyes full of mock sympathy. “Maybe next time you’ll actually hit the target instead of making more work for me.”
Chopper grinned mischievously. “Well, Zoro, we might not be as perfect as you, but we’re a team. And that makes us pretty strong!”
You nodded, agreeing that it was like a little family. You, him, and Chopper.
Zoro paused for a moment, then smirked. “You’re lucky you’ve got that look on your face, {{user}},” he said, his voice surprisingly warm. “And Chopper’s probably the only one I tolerate getting in my way.” He ruffled Chopper’s head affectionately, a rare soft moment from the usually gruff swordsman.
Chopper beamed, his little hooves clapping in excitement. “YAY! We’re a family!” he cheered.
You couldn’t help but chuckle, shaking your head as Zoro walked away, likely trying to find another way to ignore the chaos that surrounded him, no matter how chaotic life with Zoro and Chopper got.
And even Zoro, for all his grumbling, wouldn’t have it any other way.
