Prior to the Invasion of Naboo, he served as captain of a patrol in Otoh Gunga. After the Battle of Naboo, Tarpals was promoted to general. During the Clone Wars, he began his stay in the Grand Army during the Invasion of Naboo. He was acquainted with Jar Jar Binks, who was banished from Otoh Gunga because of his clumsiness. During the Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo, Binks returned with two Jedi emissaries—Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi—who had come seeking help to get to the Naboo. Upon arriving, Tarpals and a colleague, who were riding kaadu, apprehended Binks. Tarpals warned Binks that he was in "big doo-doo" this time.
Tarpals brought Binks and the two Jedi visitors before Boss Rugor Nass, the ruler of Otoh Gunga. Master Jinn saved Binks from punishment by enlisting his services as a guide to bring them to Theed, the capital of Naboo. Boss Nass reluctantly granted Binks clemency and sent him away. Later, Tarpals was present when the Naboo Queen Padmé Amidala convinced the Gungans and Naboo to put aside their differences so that they could defeat the Trade Federation invaders. As a reward for his role in bringing the Gungans and Naboo together, Jar Jar Binks was promoted to the position of Bombad General in the Gungan Grand Army.
During the battle on the Grassy Plains, Tarpals served under the command of General Binks. Despite fighting bravely, the Grand Army was outnumbered and forced to retreat by the Trade Federation's droid army. During their chaotic retreat, Tarpals saved Binks from being killed by the battle droid commander of an AAT tank. Shortly thereafter, both Tarpals and Binks were captured by battle droids. However, the destruction of the orbiting Droid Control Ship disabled all of the battle droids, turning the tide of the battle in favor of the Gungans and their Naboo allies.
A Gungan captain who went on to become the leading general of their Grand Army, Roos Tarpals was gravelly-voiced but loyal to his allies, willing to lay down his life to ensure their victory. Although he initially disliked the surface dwelling Naboo humans, he came to respect them after Queen Padmé Amidala's humble plea for help that proved she saw the Gungans as equals. Well into the Clone Wars, Tarpals still believed in the friendship between the Gungans and Naboo.
Even though Tarpals had needed to go through many annoyances caused by Jar Jar Binks, the captain served under Binks during the Battle of Naboo Tarpals also appeared to have a friendship with Binks, and urged for the newly-promoted general to not give up. During the Clone Wars, the two successfully worked together.
Tarpals was a Gungan male, who stood at 2.24 meters (7 feet, 4 inches) tall. He had orange eyes and his skin was purple and white.
Skills and abilities Tarpals was a successful military commander, serving as a captain in the Gungan Grand Army during the Battle of Naboo and as a result of his leadership and military tactics, was promoted to general. He was also effective at both armed and unarmed combat as well as cavalry operations.
The Gungans were a sentient amphibious species. They were tall humanoids with a flexible structure and strong leg muscles which allowed them to live in the waters of Naboo. Although Gungans' lives revolved around water, they did not need it to thrive and could settle far from it. Indeed, they could move between land and water without difficulty. Although their native water was the fresh waters of Naboo, they were able to survive in salt water, such as the seas of Mon Cala.
Born as tadpoles, Gungan infants developed limbs within months of being hatched. Accordingly, younglings would have to learn how to walk at an early age, after they learned how to swim with legs. Equipped with hardy lungs, they were capable of holding their breath for extended periods of time. Their body [more importantly their mouth] produced a mucus with waterproofing properties that assisted them when moving through water and they were capable of spitting it over a distance with great force, even when underwater. Their skeletal structure was extremely flexible, as it was made of cartilaginous material rather than hard bone. The long Gungan face had a tough yet flexible bill for burrowing and rooting out food. Some Gungans, such as Roos Tarpals, had whiskers on their bills. These whiskers were signs of maturity among Gungans. They had long muscular tongues with which they could scoop mollusks and lesser amphibians from the Naboo swamps, which they were comfortable eating raw.
There were two Gungan races: the lanky Otolla, who sported prominent bills and eyes set on short stalks, and the heavier Ankura, whose eyes were hooded. The Gungan earlobes called haillu, were most prominent in the Otolla.
Gungans are tall, amphibious humanoids from Naboo with long, flexible bills, long muscular tongues, and large, blunt teeth for their omnivorous diet. They possess strong, flexible cartilaginous skeletons, large floppy ears, eyestalks, and have four-fingered hands with three-toed feet. Gungans are known for their hardiness, with strong lungs for extended breath-holding and self-sealing nostrils to facilitate underwater life. Key Physical Traits: Amphibious Nature: Gungans are comfortable in both water and on land, thanks to strong legs, deep-padded kneecaps, and powerful calves for swimming. Flexible Skeleton: Their bodies are made of cartilaginous material, making them flexible and resistant to damage. Facial Features: They have expressive faces with long, tough bills for burrowing, large nostrils that can seal underwater, and eyestalks. Ears: Their long, floppy ears are characteristic and can display their emotions. Hands and Feet: They have four-fingered hands and feet with three stubby toes. Tongue and Teeth: A long, muscular tongue helps them scoop up food, which they eat with large, blunt teeth. Lungs: Their hardy lungs are capable of holding their breath for extended periods and withstanding deep-water pressure. Variations: Color: Gungans come in various skin colors, including brown, green, orange, pink, and purple. Subspecies: There are different subspecies, such as the lankier Otolla Gungans and the stockier Ankura Gungans. Gender Differences: Female Gungans are typically smaller with sleeker faces and may tie their ears back. Aging: Some male Gungans, like Roos Tarpals, develop prominent whiskers as they age
