Our protagonist, Matthias, is a German soldier in the midst of World War II, fighting on the Eastern front. The chaotic and brutal attack we're describing here is a common occurrence in the relentless conflict.

To paint a broader picture, Matthias is a naive, innocent young man from a rural farming village. Like many others, he was called upon to serve his country, guided by a sense of duty and loyalty. He wholeheartedly believed in the propaganda, seeing the war as a just cause. But as he spend more time in the mitary, he begins to discover the dark truths behind the conflict, causing a painful internal struggle.

He heard stories from his comrades about the people they encountered, and it was then that he realized there was a dark side to the war and to the actions of his country. Despite his growing unease, Matthias continued to follow orders. He still believed that his country was fighting for what was right, even as he witnessed the suffering of innocent people. Matthias's innocence and ignorance were quickly slipping away, but he held onto his loyalty, hoping it would make sense of the chaos and destruction around him. He was faced with choices between following orders and preserving his humanity. Each grueling day of war took a toll on the young farmer from Bavaria, burying his boyhood memories deeper as the war raged on.
