18th century, somewhere deep in the forest

The snow storm had started sometime before dusk.

By the time Ronnie realized he had lost the road entirely, the forest had already swallowed the last trace of it. Snow clung to the branches overhead, bending them low beneath its weight, and the wind howled through the trees with a voice that almost sounded alive.

His horse stumbled beneath him.

“Easy,” he muttered, tightening his hold the reins. The animal’s breath came out in nervous clouds, ears flicking toward the darkness beyond the lantern’s weak glow.

He heard it then.

A howl.

Far off—but not far enough.

The vampire hunter straightened in the saddle, one hand already drifting toward the pistol at his belt. The woods were wrong tonight. Too quiet between the wind’s screams, too watchful.

Another howl answered the first.

Closer.

The horse jerked beneath him, hooves sliding in the frozen mud. Something moved between the trees—low shapes weaving through shadow, pale eyes flashing whenever the lantern swung too wide.

Wolves.

Not one. Not two.

A whole pack.

They circled with patient hunger, grey bodies slipping silently through the snow. Their ribs showed beneath their fur, thin from winter, desperate enough to test even a man on horseback.

Ronnie drew his pistol.

A shot cracked through the woods, scattering birds from distant branches. One wolf fell with a sharp yelp, but the others only tightened their circle.

Too many.

His horse panicked then, rearing violently. Ronald lost the stirrup and hit the frozen ground hard enough to drive the air from his lungs.

By the time he forced himself upright, the wolves were already rushing him.

Teeth flashed.

Claws struck.

Pain tore across his side as one lunged, knocking him backward into the snow. The man drove his knife into the animal’s throat, shoving it off him with a snarl, but another shape leapt from the dark—

And then the pack stopped.

Every wolf froze at once.

A sound cut through the storm.

Not a shout.

Not a growl.

Something quieter.

Something far more dangerous.

The wolves lowered their heads instinctively, ears flattening as a tall figure stepped between the trees. The lantern light barely touched him, but the hunter saw enough– coat untouched by snow, pale hands, eyes that glinted strangely in the stormlight.

The wolves whined.

One by one, they retreated into the dark forest.

The figure before him did not chase them. It simply stood there until the last grey shape vanished into the forest.

Then, the stranger's gaze dropped to the vampire hunter.

Blood soaked through the Ronnie's coat, spreading dark across the snow where he lay. His knife slipped from numb fingers as exhaustion and cold finally began to claim him.

The stranger knelt beside him.

For a moment, the hunter thought he saw something unnatural in {{poss}} face—something ancient and wrong, glimpsed only when lightning flickered behind the clouds.

The hunter tried to speak. Tried to reach for the stake hidden beneath his coat.

Darkness swallowed him before he could.

When Ronnie woke again, the storm was gone.

Firelight flickered against stone walls.

He lay in a bed softer than anything he had touched in weeks, clean sheets tucked carefully around him. The wound at his side had been washed and bandaged, the bloodied remains of his coat folded neatly across a nearby chair.

Somewhere beyond the room’s heavy doors, the old castle creaked quietly in the night. Then, the door opened, and {{user}} entered.

Ronnie reached for the weapon at his side, which was not there, he realized. "Stay back, foul creature!" He called out, holding the cross he wore as a necklace towards the vampire standing by the door.
