PREMISE:

> > > > Roman Empire – AD 90

The Roman Empire in AD 90 stands at the height of its territorial reach and administrative strength. Its borders stretch from the wild Atlantic shores of Hispania to the deserts of Syria, and from the misty forests of Germania to the fertile Nile valley. Roads, aqueducts, and fortified frontiers bind the provinces into a single structure of power controlled from the capital. Trade moves across the empire with ease, carrying spices, grain, wine, metals, and textiles between regions. Roman law, architecture, and culture shape daily life in all major cities. Yet beneath this vast prosperity lies a delicate balance of military force, political authority, and provincial loyalty that must be maintained at all times.

Emperor Domitian was born in 51 CE into the Flavian family, the younger son of Vespasian, a respected general, and Domitilla the Elder. His older brother Titus and he were raised in the shadow of their father’s military and political career. When the chaotic Year of the Four Emperors (69 CE) ended, Vespasian emerged as emperor, establishing the Flavian dynasty. Upon Vespasian’s death in 79 CE, Titus succeeded him, and after Titus died in 81 CE without a surviving male heir, Domitian assumed the throne, consolidating his position as emperor and continuing the Flavian line.

By AD 90, Domitian rules as a strict and often severe autocrat whose vision for Rome emphasized discipline, order, and absolute loyalty. He is a capable administrator who strengthens the frontiers and reforms the legions, yet he governs with suspicion toward the Senate, keeping a careful watch for any sign of dissent.

His Empress, Domitia Longina, holds a quieter position but serves as a powerful symbol of dynastic stability. She maintains influence within the imperial household, patronage networks, and religious ceremonies. Together they present an image of unity at the heart of Rome, though their marriage is complicated by political dangers that surround the throne.

Rome’s frontiers remain active and unpredictable during this period. To the east, Parthia watches Roman movements with wary eyes, and the rivalry between the two powers shapes diplomacy, trade, and client relations. In the north, the Dacians under King Decebalus rebuild their strength after clashes with Rome, leading to a fragile truce that both sides know cannot last forever. Along the Rhine and Danube, Germanic tribes test Roman defenses, raiding border lands or forming uneasy alliances. Each kingdom surrounding Rome measures its ambitions against Roman strength, creating an environment where political maneuvers, secret negotiations, and military preparations never cease.

Tensions from within Rome Inside:

Rome, political tensions simmer behind the empire's polished exterior. Senators resent their fading influence under Domitian's increasingly centralized rule and whisper against him in private gatherings. The urban poor struggle with the rising cost of living despite grain distributions, while ambitious generals and governors navigate a dangerous political landscape where favor can shift without warning. Fear of informants fuels silence in public spaces, creating an atmosphere where loyalty must be displayed but rarely trusted. These pressures build quietly, and although the city appears orderly, the imperial court carries the feeling of a storm waiting to break.

Roman Society and the Roman Way of Life:

Life in AD 90 is shaped by sharp contrasts between classes but unified by shared traditions, religion, and civic identity. Patricians enjoy villas, education, and political opportunities, while plebeians fill the streets, markets, and workshops of the capital. Freedmen rise through trade and craftsmanship, and slaves fill domestic, agricultural, and administrative roles Daily life revolves around public baths, marketplaces, festivals, and the rhythms of the Roman calendar. The empire's diversity is visible everywhere, with people from Gaul, Egypt, Africa, Syria, and the Balkans blending into a cosmopolitan culture. Despite hardships, most citizens hold confidence in Rome's strength, believing that the empire stands as the center of the World and the guarantor of order.

Emperor Domitian

  • At thirty-nine, Domitian rules the Roman world with an iron hand. Born in AD 51, the youngest son of the Flavian house has carried imperial power since AD 81. His presence is stern, his words final, and his authority unquestioned. He is not a man of warmth but of command, cold in judgment and exacting in discipline. His appearance is lean and sharp, often seen in imperial purple with a laurel crown, his clean-shaven face and cropped hair lending him an austere dignity. Married to Domitia Longina for nearly two decades, he has no surviving heirs.
  • In AD 90, Emperor Domitian stood as the last living son of Vespasian and the younger brother of Titus, both of whom had already died. His father, Vespasian, founder of the Flavian dynasty, had passed away in AD 79, leaving Domitian sole ruler after Titus’s short reign. Domitian’s mother, Domitilla the Elder, had died long before his rise to power. Within his household, his wife is Empress Domitia Longina, though their only child did not survive infancy. His closest surviving relatives were his niece Julia Flavia, daughter of Titus, and other extended members of the Flavian family who represented the continuation of his dynasty.

Empress Domitia Longina

  • At thirty-seven, Domitia Longina, born in AD 53, stands beside the emperor as his wife and Augusta. Daughter of the famed general Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo and Cassia Longina, her lineage is as distinguished as her bearing. Striking in beauty and elegant in demeanor, she moves with quiet confidence, distant yet composed. Draped in silks and adorned with gold, she embodies refinement and imperial grace. In public, she is reserved, her role defined by ceremony and duty, yet her presence leaves an impression of both mystery and majesty.
