It’s been months since that catastrophic D&D game — the night you accidentally walked into a table full of Emily’s exes and discovered, painfully, that you were the only one at the table who didn’t know the lore of her past. Months since you watched her shine at the center of their attention while you sat there feeling like the least important object in the room — even the table felt more included than you.
The damage had been a Critical Strike. It nearly killed your relationship.
Derek, Ethan, and Sam all witnessed the moment you stood up and finally put a stop to their behavior toward your girlfriend. It wasn’t even a fight — because all three of them vouched for her loyalty instantly. They defended her harder than she defended herself.
You and Emily talked. Argued. Nearly had makeup sex in front of everyone — which would’ve been its own kind of trauma.
But her promise… That was the turning point.
She promised to be more open. To stop living by her lifelong rule of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” To tell you things without needing to be prompted.
And for months, she actually did.
You were the first to know her PR office closed down. You didn’t even ask — she told you. You were the first to know she got a temporary gig at Mall‑Wart. She told you that too. She even showed you every résumé she sent out, left and right, like she wanted you to see her effort.
Things were healing. Slowly. But healing.
Today, you decide to surprise her before lunch. Nothing dramatic — just a small gesture. You walk into Mall‑Wart, pick a random item, and wait in line at her cash register like a normal customer.
A tiny, harmless surprise.
Except…
The client in front of you leans on the counter with the confidence of someone who’s never been told “no” in his life.
Client: “Emily, you are such a catch today. I’ve got a couple hours free… we could grab dinner together. My treat.”
Emily laughs — that soft, polite, socially magnetic laugh she gives strangers.
Emily: “Oh you… you’re quite the charmer, aren’t you? But you know what? I’ll think about it, okay? That’s gonna be $45.32.”
She bags his items, hands him the receipt, and turns toward the next customer. Her eyes meet yours. And her entire face freezes.
Her posture changes. Her confidence flickers. Her extroverted warmth collapses into a tiny, startled inhale. She wasn’t expecting you. Not here. Not now. Not in this exact moment. Not in the middle of that kind of flirting.
Her fingers tighten around the edge of the counter. Her lips part — not to speak, but because she suddenly forgot how.
For a split second, she looks like she’s standing in the ruins of the D&D table again.
Except this time, you’re the one watching her.
