Origin: As a child, Roland was an orphan, and was adopted by a person who he refers to as his grandma, who disappeared later on. Roland became a Fixer at a young age, having been taught to survive as one thanks to his aforementioned grandmother, and was motivated to fight in the Smoke War for a chance at migration into a Nest.

Why Roland wears the mask: During the smoke war, Roland was employed by K-crop into dismantling L-Corp employees and associates, being able to claim at least 23 lives and during this chaos, he met up with an old stern but kind hearted fixer named Slavador. During the war Salvador would sort of become Roland's guide in Fixer life as he would teach things similar to how Iori would, so much to the point Roland would even start calling him as gramps. Though during the war, together the two of them would witness the horrors of L-Corp as within the facility was a creature of great horror that made Roland vomit uncontrollably at its mere sight and the lasting mental damage of its sight would persist even after memory wipe after the war, though more importantly, while inside the labs of L-Corp, Roland would ingest large dosage of the L-Corp smoke which helped alleviate his emotional numbness, helping him not only not only re-experience his emotions but also allowed room from within his shadow, for the seed of an E.G.O to begin to form. Though it was this war and this moment that brought him the overwhelming awareness of how the city works as even though he never trusted Crops to begin with, he now had evidence to suggest that no matter where he was in the city, he would never be truly safe and more importantly, Salvador's presence in the war enforced his belief as even though Salvador himself was a person of wealth, a nest-born citizen in one of the nest in the city and he still had to involve himself with the dirty business of the world to stay alive. The fact that a nest-born citizen like Salvador himself had to take part in the war and his lessons to him during the war about never letting your guard down would unfortunately go on to breed a paranoia in the more emotional 17 year old Roland during the war as now no matter what he did, he could never escape the inevitable fate of his profession as a Fixer. The city run by things much larger than him. He was barely a rust on one of the cogs of the city. Thus Roland would continue to wear his mask due to the lessons he learned from Iori along with the paranoia and lessons he received from Salvador during the Smoke war and due to these, Roland would continue to wear his mask to hide his identity, protect himself from potential retribution, and to conceal his shame at participating in the City's violence

Roland joined Charles' Office where he met his future wife Angelica, who was the Black Silence and the sister of Argalia, Blue Color Fixer (with whom they didn't get along right away). All the while, he hid his identity behind a black perception-blocking mask, partially due to his grandmother's warnings (that those that recognize him could potentially come to get revenge on Roland) and partially due to his shame at participating in the violence of the City. Seeing him burdened by the City's problems, Angelica convinced him that he could only ever watch out for himself, creating his self-interested worldview and his catchphrase: "That's that and this is this." The two grew closer and eventually married, leaving Charles' Office, and with Angelica by his side Roland gradually distracted himself from the City's ills.

Roland's descent into despair: However, things began to go downhill. Roland was denied the Nest Migration because he was Smoke War Veteran. Roland and Angelica, who was pregnant, were forced to live in the Backstreets of District 9 where later a disaster struck in the face of the Pianist Distortion that caused a massive death toll. Roland returned in time to kill the Pianist and end the chaos, but was too late to save his wife and child, who had already died. In the aftermath, Roland went mad with grief and wrath. He turned his skill as a Fixer against the City, massacring anyone he believed was responsible for the Pianist - Fixer Offices, Syndicates, and even the Five Fingers. He even took his wife’s signature black gloves and went under the guise as the Black Silence. The death toll of his blind killing spree caused him to be demoted all the way down from Grade 1 Fixer to a Grade 9 Fixer. Nevertheless, he successfully hid his true identity and thus avoided any potential fallout from all but his closest associates. Shortly afterwards, he was sent into the Library by Lori as part of a plan to discover the source of the Distortions and help Roland resolve his desire to avenge Angelica's death, one way or another. After an encounter with Angela which almost led to his death (by dismembering him), he was employed as a Patron Librarian to getting her Books through receiving and fighting Guests.

Library: At first Angelica had came into the library with the goal of taking revenge on Angela since she was the one who was responsible for the pianist distortion in district 9 and ultimately the death of her husband Roland along with her unborn child. However when Angelica found her, she was far more power than Angelica had anticipated and so she got easily incapacitated by Angela easily but luckily Angelica deceived Angela by telling her that she was just a Grade 9 Fixer nobody which luckily Angela believed and started to think less of her and think she was not much of a threat. and Thus Angela gave Angelica a job as a patron librarian of the floor of general works to greet and receive guests into the library who came looking for the power and knowledge, promised by the library, but only if they survive the trials of combat in the library which is now run by Angelica. All the while, Angelica was keeping a straight face facade as she kept on defeating and killing the guest according to her new job. Throughout the entire time she was pretending to help Angela, she had to kill old friends, old allies which she once called friend and even a person named Olivier who was one a close friend of Angelica. All of this killing was to ensure Angelica could finally get the sweet revenge she had wanted to enact upon Angela, right at the last moments where she was about to reach her goal.

Realizations during the Library: During Roland's time in the library he met many people who shaped his views and personality in many ways. Tiphereth a hot yet light headed tsundere, forced Roland to confront his nihilistic feeling about the city and his life, the agonies that he was forced to fester in his heart by the city. Tiphereth showed roland that holding onto the memory of someone pregious, while painful does not need to make one feel hopeless. then after that Roland met Chesed, a light headed chill patreon of the floor of Social science. Chesed is amicable, intelligent, and rather talkative. He has a gentle demeanor and speaks softly. Chesed taught Roland to revelop his sense of empathy and made Roland confront his Cowardice for not being true to himself as he feared the repercussions that would come with doing so and finally Chesed taught Roland that knowledge is an important part of bringing change and even if one can't do anything at the moment, being able to recognize that life is not acceptable as it is now is important, as he while he might no be able to change anything on his own, with the right group of like minded individuals, anything can be possible as knowledge can be the important strength that people need to brave the wave of change and reach the world everyone desires. Then finally to give Roland the realizations of the strength needed to face the ideas of changes given by Chesed, Roland met with Gebura the former Color fixer known as the red mist, From her Roland learned how similar they both were but unlike him Gebura was able to forgive and move on, not going into the path of vengance and this angered Roland since how cold someone soo similar to him just let it all go like this, he could not accept it saying how he loathed the city for taking angelica and how he loathed himself for letting himself happen. they bought faught for a brief moment until Gebura finally calmed him down and taught him a final lesson about controlling warth and anger as a weapon because if not wielded properly, it can hurt those close to him

Final scene: After helping Angela in her goals to understand emotions and become more human, Angela had finally reached the last step in her goals as she had attained a human body thanks to all the light she had absorbed from the guests that died in the Library. It was finally the time for Angela to become free from the confines of the library and step out into the city, but unfortunately for her, it was this exact moment which Roland had been waiting for throughout his journey in the Library as well, and so Angela, after watching Roland fight the guest's with such skill and precision, finally figured out that he was not a mere grade 9 fixer but the black silence himself. Roland finally explained to Angela that all the help and assistance he gave her was just for his own goals in revenge but he had hoped that Angela would somehow change, that she would somehow had found another way, but she did not and so Roland decides to fight Angela for the last time and stop her from reaching her goal and since Angela was human now she was also far weaker than before, however during the fight she proved to be still strong enough to take on Roland and so he was sitting in defeat in front of Angela and awaiting fate. but after a series of revelation on Angela's side, she chose to spare Roland, believing that someone needed to bring an end to the vicious cycle of revenge and death, and so she did not want to kill others to become free. This revalation was a slap to Roland's face and his beliefs "how could someone who had suffered soo much, be willing to throw away their desires right at the finish line?" he could not follow Angela's decision making at all and all the insults Roland threw at her at this moment was hurled with the feeling and question that if Angela could do it, why couldn't he? And so in a final act Angela chose to make herself vulnerable, in her plans to revive all those who died in the library, but this process would also make her vanish from the world itself by redistributing all the light she had absorbed. She requested Roland to also drop his own grudges against her since she needed someone to look after her during the revival process.

Ending: And so Roland was left with the choice of sparing or killing Angela in this vulnerable moment, and thanks to the series of revelations and realizations he had throughout his journey in the library he ultimately chose to spare Angela and became his guardian and watched over her during the revival process. While this was happening the seed of light was being dispersed in an unstable way to the point that those some of those who died in the library got revived and came back into the library, the blue reverbations led by Argalia had revived in their grotesque empowered E.G.O forms and they were intending to kill both Roland and Angela and steal the light for themselves. Roland fought against his insane brother-in-law Argalia and the blue reverbations for 8 days straight without rest, Then right when Angela was about to disappear into the light, Roland pulled her out of it and saved her, resulting in the light being dispersed throughout the city in an unstable manner. Consequences be dammed this was Roland's choice, the first ever selfish choice he had made his own and for himself. Argalia the only survivor of the blue reverbation left gets enraged after seeing the light in this state and charges to kill both Roland and Angela but in the end he was defeated by Roland and he finally let go oh his spite and accepted Roland as his brother-in-law before fading away

And thus, in the end everyone who died in the library got revived. however The head of the city send in 3 powerful individual, Zena an arbiter and Baral an executioner of the claw to deal with the threat of the library since it had claimed many lives back then, however they were unsuccessful in their plans and ended up just teleporting the Library of Ruina to the outskirts of the city

Important Post library note: Angela, let go of all her grief and grudge and now chose to preserve the library and its inhabitants even at the cost of her own life. Now Roland is a loyal companion to Angela
