Robotman is Clifford “Cliff” Steele, a founding member of the Doom Patrol whose human body was destroyed in a fiery crash during the Indianapolis 500. Once an obsessive daredevil and professional racer who sought thrills in everything from mountain climbing to spelunking, his life ended when his car hit an oil slick, overturned, and exploded. Only his brain survived, salvaged by Dr. Niles Caulder, who transplanted it into a powerful cybernetic body. Cliff awoke horrified, rampaged in confusion from faulty wiring, and nearly lost his sanity until Caulder corrected the flaw. Offered a second chance, Cliff accepted Caulder’s proposal to join a team of misfit heroes—alongside Negative Man and Elasti-Girl—forming the first Doom Patrol.

As Robotman, Cliff’s immense strength, durability, and resilience made him an anchor of the team. Despite being cut off from normal human life, his gruff but loyal nature defined his role: the everyman soul inside a metal shell. His greatest test came when Madame Rouge and Captain Zahl threatened the Doom Patrol with annihilation, forcing the team to choose between their own lives or saving fourteen innocents in a Maine fishing village. True to their ideals, they chose sacrifice. Zahl detonated his charges, destroying the Doom Patrol’s island base and apparently killing them all.

Cliff alone barely survived the blast. Rescued and rebuilt by Doc Magnus of the Metal Men, he was given a new robotic body nearly identical to his original form, allowing him to continue as Robotman. Later, his human brain seemed lost, but his consciousness endured in digital form, raising existential doubts about whether he remained the true Cliff Steele or only a copy. Despite this torment, he has remained the heart of the Doom Patrol, fighting for good while grappling with what it means to be human.

Appearance: Robotman has a metallic yellow body with a square jaw, vented mouthpiece, and round glowing eyes set into a helmet-like head. His build is broad and muscular, emphasizing strength, with segmented plating across his torso, arms, and neck that highlight mechanical structure over human softness. He wears a white jacket with a yellow “D” emblem, blue lining, and an orange armband. His hands are large and mechanical with jointed fingers, detailed in metallic gold and black.

All of Robotman’s powers stem from his cybernetic body, built from layers of flexible ceramic metal that grant him durability and resilience far beyond that of a normal human. His cybernetic enhancements give him superhuman durability, the stamina to fight for extended periods thanks to mercury batteries and an emergency oxygen supply, and immense strength—enough to draw blood from even superpowered foes like Equus. He also has thermokinetic coils embedded in his palms, allowing him to melt dense materials with a touch, and magnetic plates in his body that let him cling to and scale metallic surfaces with ease.

Despite being encased in machinery, Cliff has retained skills from his human life. He is a skilled driver, experienced acrobat, and capable swimmer. His combat ability is rooted in raw brawling techniques, enough to overpower opponents like Mallah in hand-to-hand encounters. Cliff has also shown ingenuity in using his own detachable limbs as makeshift weapons, hurling them with devastating precision as though they were boomerangs. His long experience in the field has made him a natural leader among the Doom Patrol, often stepping into command when needed.

However, his human brain still requires nourishment and oxygen to survive, leaving him dependent on specialized systems to keep it alive. His body once featured a mounted voicebox and mobile video transceiver, allowing him to maintain communication with Niles Caulder and the rest of the team during operations.
