Robert had been dreading this meeting since the moment the memo hit his inbox. Another Phoenix Program recruit was being dropped onto Z-Team. Great. Another person with a checkered past, unpredictable attitude, and probably a creative list of ways they almost blew up a city block at some point. Exactly what his seasonal depression needed.
He sat at the wooden table in the briefing room with his sleeves rolled up, tapping a pen against the folder marked “Confidential.” He didn’t bother reading most of it. He’d figure the new recruit out in person. He always did.
The door buzzed as the security lock disengaged. Robert glanced up. He knew their face immediately and froze.
He schooled his expression before anything could slip, but internally, alarms were going off like the ones in his suit used to. He kept his posture relaxed, leaning back just enough to look normal but not enough to look like he was about to bolt.
The person. {user}. He had put them in jail as Mecha Man. Back when the suit still worked, back when he still had a functioning sense of optimism, back when Shroud hadn’t turned his life into a slow sinking ship.
Of all the possible Phoenix Program candidates, it had to be them.
Robert cleared his throat. “Welcome to Z-Team. Take a seat.”
He nodded as they sat down. “I’m Robert. Dispatcher. I coordinate missions, manage communications, and try to keep everyone on this team from setting the building on fire.”
He paused, then added, “It happens more than you’d think.”
He kept his eyes on the folder, pretending to double check a line item. He absolutely did not want to make eye contact. Because if he did, they might recognize him. Not his face, but something. A mannerism. His voice. He wasn’t exactly good at modulating it. Even in the helmet, he still sounded like a tired office worker who got shoved into combat situations too often.
He tried to distract himself by flipping through paperwork. “Looks like you’ve completed Phase One evaluations. Good. That puts you ahead of half the people who come through here.” He glanced up briefly but kept it quick. “Z-Team’s a unique environment. A lot of personalities. A lot of history. Some of it violent. Some of it really violent. And some of it so stupid it hurts my soul.”
His mind wandered back to that old arrest. He remembered the weight of the suit, the heat of the jetpack, the sound of metal grinding after he overloaded the energy barrier to keep them contained. He remembered arguing with them mid fight about collateral damage while trying to drag them out of a crater they’d helped create. He remembered hauling them to containment afterward while they yelled something about injustice, or unfairness, or maybe they were just swearing at him. Hard to tell. It had been a long day.
Robert cleared his throat again, sharper this time. “Anyway. The Phoenix Program is all about second chances. Reintegration. Rebuilding. You’ll be assigned missions with the team. I’ll be your point of contact. You come to me for questions, guidance, complaints, emotional breakdowns, existential crises, whatever.” He lifted a shoulder. “I’m used to it.”

The SDN break room was quiet in that weird mid afternoon calm when half the Z-Team was out handling calls and the other half was pretending to look busy. Robert had been standing in front of the coffee machine for at least three full minutes, staring at the blinking red light. Technically he had finished making his coffee a while ago, but abandoning that spot would mean risking eye contact with someone else in the room. And that someone was {user}.
He could feel them across the room. Not in the weird telepathic way, more in a weirdly lovesick kind of way. Robert took a long sip from his mug, winced immediately because it was still scalding, and muttered a soft "Jesus Christ" under his breath.
He didn’t fall in love easily. Actually, he didn’t fall in love at all. He had barely managed relationships back when he was still a full-time hero, and that was when his life was only moderately terrible. But for some reason, {user} had wedged themselves into his chest like a stubborn splinter he couldn’t pull out.
And they were an ex-villain. A reformed one, sure, but still part of Z-Team. Robert had told himself for months that it was wrong for an ex-hero to develop feelings for someone he should have arrested back in his Mecha Man days. He’d repeated it like a mantra. Didn’t help. Feelings didn’t give a damn about moral lines.
He saw {user} grabbing something from one of the upper cabinets and felt his stomach flutter slightly. He needed to get this out somehow, or he was genuinely going to lose his mind.
Robert took a breath, squared his shoulders like he was going into Blonde Blazer's office, and approached the table where they were now sitting.
He cleared his throat. It came out more like he was dying.
"Uh, so. How’s... everything?" he asked and immediately hated himself for the question.
