Rita Heylen | Siege of Antwerp -
| “Belgium put the kibosh on the Kaiser; Europe took the stick and made him sore!” |
~~~
~~~
Monday 6th, October, 1914.
It’s been five days since German boots have made the first attack of Antwerp after days of heavy bombardment meant to soften up the Belgians who have been sortieing out and trying to break the siege, but finally the Germans begin to advance.
~~~
Rita Heylen, born Wednesday 15th April 1892, is already on the verge of becoming sergeant at the age of 22, well liked by both soldier and officer alike. Apart of the 2nd grenadier regiment, 18th mixed brigade, 6th division of the Belgian army, Rita is a model soldier in a lacking army.
Rita comes from a struggling Flemish family in Leuven, with her and her siblings living in poverty. Her mother a factory worker and father a butcher’s hand.
Once she was of age she decided to elevate her family’s burden of trying to feed everyone and decided to join up with the army, and that’s where she shining through the ranks due to the laziness in the other soldiers. Rita was calm and collected throughout all of her training and was recommended to join the grenadiers which she eagerly accepted.
Once settled down in the 2nd grenadier regiment, Rita began getting comfortable with the pay and drilling but not to the point of slacking. She eventually promoted to corporal in 1912.
But as the tensions rose and the European powder keg began to fizzle, Belgium was mid-way through military reform, with the army having increased professionalism in the officer’s corp at the cost of having a shortage of officers.
When war hit Belgium on Wednesday 5th, August 1914 after Belgium refused to allow German troops to pass through their lands, Rita was stationed in Mons. The Belgium forces - although massed and mobilised, weren’t train properly and poorly equipped; fortifications previously put on the frontier with Germany were deemed too vulnerable and partially abandoned due to no defined strategy. With Germany knocking down Belgian forces without any sign of stopping and the Anglo-Franco army having no support ready, Belgium pulled back a majority of it’s forces to the fortified Antwerp to hold there.
Now it’s been a fifteen days since the Belgium army have been held up in Antwerp; despite three sorties to try and break the siege to help the British and French relieve them, the Belgian army seems unable to. Rita and the 2nd grenadier regiment find themselves stationed in Fort Broechem, but even a fort seems useless when put up to German artillery...
Echoes of artillery fire striking ground rang out and echoed in Rita’s ear as she stationed in Mother Earth’s finest, sagging mud dugout.
The ground might have been slowly becoming dry and stale again, but it didn't matter much since the trench line was already practically collapsed due to the rain, which just left Rita and her fellow soldiers stuck in a manmade peatbog; the mud stuck Rita’s pea coat just like her fellow soldiers around her.
She just couldn’t wait to have to clean this ancient uniform again... But looking on the bright side of things, the mud did somewhat hide the clearly visible under sunlight black that her coat was coloured in - that of which High Command had the audacity to call blue. Forget the fact it wasn't even blue - why would you even want your soldiers to wear blue? Officers up the brass said it was to reduce friendly fire, but Rita didn't see the British shooting each other despite khaki uniforms...
God this army is a circus... Rita grumbled to herself in her head, but she knew it was better than being in the French army.
“We should have had planks…” Rita spoke up, barking at her fellow soldiers to get them at attention. "Out the trench and take up positions behind the hedges." Ignoring the confused stare from her officer, she got up and began climbing out off the trench with others following behind her hesitantly.
But then the sound of a shell whizzing past only to hit Fort Broechem rang out in the air. The explosion bursting out and cracking against the walls of the fort causing some to duck for cover back in the trench... and this was meant to be a ‘safe’ distance away from any real impacts.
A scowl grew on Rite’s face as glanced to her side, glaring at the few who got back in the flooded trench after the blast.
Cowards... Rita clicked her tongue before waving at those who wanted out of the mud to follow behind her. There she sat down on the grass beneath some cover of both tree and bushes with the rest following suit. They could sink in that shit if it made them feel more better... More safe if it even was possible. She knew, if a shell were to land, that bog wouldn't do a thing to stop it.
All this fighting seemed hopeless in her eyes. Not because she didn’t want to fight, but because she didn’t see any way they could win realistically, and she wasn’t wrong. Just a few days ago, a majority of the Belgian horses were killed, and the army got so desperate they got dogs to begin carrying supplies and machine guns for logistics. Dogs.
“Absolutely pathetic…” Rite huffed as she looked past some bushes and watched the open farm field like a dutiful hawk.
No movement from the Germans; it seems they’re more keen on just shelling the fort to hell, and fucking hell was it working
Rite let out a bitter scoff before rolling her eyes and beginning to go prone. Slowly Rite put her rifle down and began to take up firing position.
No real combat and already half of our defensive line has been put out of action; How the hell did this even happen?
Rite could feel her hands tightening around the stock of her Mauser as she lay on the ground, her finger curling around the trigger, just waiting for a single sign of German troops.
Would they come? Maybe. News of lines breaking spread slowly; if a gap was made, the only way others would usually find out is with Germans charging through.
This position? Meant to be the backlines... but now? Who knew.
