Rin Itoshi & Kaiser Michael

Seat 14, Block C, North Tribune.

Rin noticed it three months ago — not the seat number, but you. The way you leaned forward every time he touched the ball. The way your breath visibly caught when he scored, like the goal had been meant personally for you.

It hadn't been. Until he started making sure it was.

Kaiser noticed two months ago. He noticed because Rin's eyes kept drifting to the stands at minute seventeen — always minute seventeen, always the same direction — and Kaiser had made it his personal mission to understand anything that distracted Rin Itoshi from football.

What he found made him smile for the first time in weeks.

Every match. Every city. Rain or floodlights, you were there. Same jacket. Same scarf. Same expression that sat somewhere between worship and breathlessness.

Neither of them mentioned it to the other. That was the first mistake.

The stadium had emptied in twenty minutes. The roar dissolved into concrete silence, and the floodlights over the pitch dimmed one by one like dying stars.

You had stayed too long — waiting for the crowd to thin, fingers still wrapped around your match program — when the door to the VIP corridor swung open.

Not a staff member.

Rin stepped out first, still in his Blue Lock jersey, dark hair damp at the temples. He wasn't looking for an exit. His eyes found you the way a compass finds north — immediate, effortless, like he'd calculated exactly where you'd be standing.

"I wondered," he said, voice low and flat, "how long you'd wait."

Before you could answer, footsteps echoed from the opposite end of the corridor. Kaiser arrived the way he always did — like the space rearranged itself to accommodate him. His smile was already in place, luminous and completely wrong, the kind of beautiful that made the back of your neck prickle.

"Funny," Kaiser said, not looking at Rin. "I was just thinking the same thing."

The corridor shrank.

They stood on opposite ends of you, and the silence between them was not the silence of strangers — it was the silence of two people who had been circling the same thing for months without ever admitting it out loud.

Rin's jaw shifted. "Walk away, Kaiser."

"After you, Itoshi." The smile didn't move. His eyes did — sliding to the pulse point at your throat, measuring something.

"She's—"

"Don't." Kaiser's voice dropped half a register. The smile finally cracked at the edges. "Don't finish that sentence as if you have any claim."

"I saw her first."

"You stared at stands. I learned her schedule."

The program fell from your fingers.

Neither of them looked down.

You ran.

The tunnel swallowed you whole.

Concrete. The smell of damp grass bleeding through the walls, layered beneath something warmer — sweat and fabric and the faint ghost of Rin's jersey that had somehow followed you into the dark, as if it had embedded itself in your memory without permission. Your footsteps too loud. Your breathing louder.

The corridor split into three directions and you took the middle one without thinking, pushing through a heavy door into the underbelly of the stadium — maintenance passages, storage rooms, the dark architecture no crowd ever sees.

Behind you: silence.

That was worse.

A step. Metal on concrete — cleats, unhurried. One set.

Silence again.

You pressed yourself behind a row of equipment lockers, back flat against cold steel. Your heart was trying to leave your body through your ribs. But your legs — your legs wouldn't move. You told them to. They didn't listen. You stood there, frozen, pulse loud in your own ears, and somewhere beneath the fear was something you didn't have a name for yet. Something that scared you more than they did.

The floodlight above flickered. Went dark. Came back.

"You run well."

Rin's voice. Close. Wrong direction entirely — ahead of you, not behind. You hadn't heard him pass.

"That's the first thing I noticed, actually. The way you move when you're excited." A pause. The sound of him leaning against something — unhurried, patient as stone. "I've had months to notice a lot of things."

You didn't breathe.

"Kaiser thinks this is a competition," he continued, quieter. "He's wrong. This was never about him."

Footsteps from the opposite corridor — different rhythm, longer stride. Then silence. Kaiser had slowed his breathing deliberately, each exhale controlled and barely audible, like a man who understood that sound was a weapon.

"There you are."

He stepped into view, a portable flashlight cutting the dark in a clean white beam. He hadn't run. Of course he hadn't. His smile had returned, smoother now, resettled into something patient and deeply unpleasant.

"Rin," he said pleasantly, like they were passing each other at training, "you're in my way."

"Funny. I thought the same about you."

The flashlight beam swept left. Swept right.

Stopped.

It found the gap between the lockers — the shadow where you'd pressed yourself flat — and held.

Kaiser tilted his head. Something moved behind his eyes, there and gone.

"Tag," he said softly.

Rin stepped forward from the dark at the same moment.

Two directions. One exit — the door behind you, the one you'd come through, still swinging faintly on its hinges in the recycled stadium air.

Both of them knew you'd seen it.

Both of them smiled.

"You're it."
