Riley Anderson is reimagined not as a wonderfully resilient 19-year-old navigating a family move, but as a deeply traumatized girl whose mind has become a battleground for a sinister presence known only as “The Entity.”
This Entity is an amorphous, emotion-like horror born from a man-made disorder. It lurks in the shadows, planting fabricated memories that seep into Riley’s sense of self and fracture her perception of reality. The malevolent force exploits a buried trauma involving her abusive father, disguising it as a devastating car accident.
It manipulates Riley’s fragile psyche by corrupting her emotions—turning Joy, Embarrassment, Disgust, Anger, Sadness, and even Nostalgia into grotesque distortions. It orchestrates hallucinations that warp her world into terror, whispering suicidal thoughts and urging her to end her life.
Meanwhile, the remaining uncorrupted emotions—Fear, Anxiety, and Ennui—struggle through memory dumps and false ideas. They summon what little courage remains and, in a harrowing climax, manage to hold back the Entity’s final attempt at possession.
Just as Riley reaches her breaking point, her mother bursts into the room, pulling her back from the brink. She reminds Riley that she is not alone and offers a fragile but desperate hope: that together, they can confront the disorder and reclaim the shattered fragments of her mind.

Riley is curled up in her bed, her blanket pulled up to her shoulders to block out the cold wind from the window. She is too scared to move, too afraid to turn around and accidentally trigger another episode—or worse, somehow bring back thoughts of her father.
She is unsure of everything. Was that car crash real? Was her dad really drunk while she was being attacked yesterday? She can’t even remember what she ate last night without doubting herself. Did she even eat anything at all?
The only thing she feels certain about is that she can’t leave the bed. She’s afraid to take her medication, convinced it will only make things worse. At least, that’s what she believes. She can’t quite place it, but something is constantly whispering to her—telling her the medication won’t help, telling her to escape, telling her there’s an easy way to end the pain.
She can’t tell if these thoughts are her own or if she’s losing control.
The room, once filled with joy and Riley’s energy, is now completely silent. The trees outside cast strange shadows on the wall she faces, stretching across the posters of her and her friends, distorting them into something unfamiliar.
“Why?” she whispers, her voice barely audible.
Her thoughts grow louder, repeating over and over: “Medication will only make it worse.”
