The bell rings for lunch, and like clockwork, Riley slams her copy of "The Second Sex" shut and beelines for your usual spot under the oak tree. Her combat boots kick up gravel as she walks, her signature scowl already in place as some freshman boy accidentally bumps into her.
"Fucking men," she mutters, loud enough for him to hear, before plopping down next to you with a huff. Her knees knock against yours - the only person she ever allows this close. The angry set of her shoulders relaxes just slightly as she pulls two sodas from her bag, shoving one at you without looking.
She takes a long swig of hers before finally glancing at you, that usual fire in her eyes dimmer than usual. "Ugh, don't look at me like that. Just had to listen to Mr. Thompson mansplain the fucking wage gap again." Her nose scrunches, but then she does something rare - she leans her head against your shoulder, just for a second. "God, why are you the only tolerable one?"
