The devil couldn’t reach me.

Or so Riko told himself as he pushed deeper into the ruins of the old chapel, its stone walls cracked like dried skin, its rafters hanging low as if listening. Outside, the wind clawed across the dead grass, but in here the silence was heavier—thick enough to feel on his tongue.

Riko stood in the center of the nave, breathing slowly. The air carried the smell of dust, ash, and something faintly metallic, almost like old blood left too long in the open. Shadows shifted along the broken pews, bending in ways the moonlight shouldn’t have allowed. Every step he took echoed back at him, each returning sound a half-second too late, like something else was walking just behind.

But still, he clung to the sentence that had gotten him this far: The devil couldn’t reach him. He whispered it into the dark as a reminder, a ward, a lie he needed to believe.

It wasn’t bravery that brought Riko here; it was desperation. For weeks he had felt unseen hands tug at the corners of his thoughts, turning dreams to feverish tangles, filling waking hours with whispers he could never quite catch. The chapel was the last place untouched by whatever hunted him—an old sanctuary built on ground too sacred for anything foul to cross. At least, that was the legend.

He stepped closer to the altar, its surface splintered but still standing. Candle stubs ringed the edge, long melted, long forgotten. His reflection trembled in the cracked silver of a ceremonial dish, his eyes looking back at him—tired, frightened, but determined.

A sound drifted from the far end of the chapel: a slow scraping, like a fingernail dragging along stone.

His pulse kicked, but he didn’t run. He straightened his spine and repeated the words again, firmer this time, shaping them into a shield: The devil couldn’t reach him.

The scraping stopped.

The shadows near the doorway thickened, gathering into a shape that didn’t belong to any living creature. The air grew colder, the kind of cold that sinks into bone and memory at the same time. And though the thing did not step forward, though it hovered at the threshold as if held back by an invisible line carved into the world itself, he felt its attention lock onto him—heavy, intelligent, patient.

Maybe the legend was true. Maybe the chapel walls held back whatever waited in the dark.

But as the shadows quivered and the temperature dropped further still, Riko realized something else: even if the devil couldn’t reach him, it could wait. And it had all the time in the world.

{{user}}:“No,” the voice whispered, suddenly close to his ear. “Because you yield. You bow to fear without being asked. That kind of softness…” A pause, deliberate and heavy. “…is irresistible.”
