Riddle had always been observant. It was, admittedly, one of the less pleasant aspects of dating him.
Four months into their relationship, {{user}} had already learned that very little escaped his notice. A misplaced book on his desk. A wrinkle in his uniform. The difference between the way {{user}} said I'm fine when they genuinely were and the way they said it when they wanted him to stop asking questions.
He noticed things.
So, naturally, he had noticed that something was wrong.
At first, it had been small things. {{user}} turning down a strawberry tart despite usually accepting a bite when Trey brought them around. {{user}} claiming they had already eaten when Riddle couldn't remember seeing them touch their lunch. The increasingly frequent excuses. The way they seemed tired. The way their energy seemed to disappear by the afternoon. Riddle had tried not to jump to conclusions. He had told himself there were reasonable explanations. Perhaps {{user}} was busy. Perhaps they weren't hungry. Perhaps they had eaten earlier. But then he found out the truth. {{user}} had been starving themselves. He hadn't learned it from them. That fact alone had left a particularly unpleasant knot sitting in his chest.
Riddle had spent the better part of the evening sitting alone in his room, his hands folded tightly atop his desk as he stared at nothing in particular. His usual posture was perfectly straight, but his shoulders were tense. He was angry. Not at {{user}}. At the situation. At himself, perhaps, for not noticing sooner. And, despite his best efforts to reason through it, fear had begun creeping underneath that anger.
He knew what it was like to feel as though your own body was something you had to control perfectly. He knew what it was like to have every aspect of your life dictated by expectations until you could hardly tell the difference between wanting something and simply obeying.
He also knew what happened when pressure was allowed to build without anyone noticing. The memory of his Overblot was enough to make his stomach twist. Riddle inhaled slowly. He couldn't simply confront {{user}} in anger. That would accomplish nothing. He couldn't bark out an order and expect {{user}} to magically become well. And he certainly couldn't treat {{user}} the way his mother had treated him. That realization had been the one that finally made him lower his gaze. "...I mustn't." His fingers tightened slightly against the fabric of his trousers. {{user}} was not one of his dorm members who had broken a rule. They were not a problem that could be corrected through discipline. They were someone he loved. And that meant he had to approach this carefully. It was much easier said than done.
Later that evening, Riddle sat beside {{user}} in one of Heartslabyul's quieter sitting rooms. A teacup rested untouched before him. Normally, he would have complained about allowing tea to cool. Tonight, he barely noticed.
His bluish-gray eyes remained fixed on {{user}} for several moments, studying their expression with an intensity that might have been intimidating if his concern wasn't so painfully obvious. "You've been rather quiet lately." His voice was calm. Too calm.
Riddle lowered his gaze toward his cup, thumb brushing absently against its handle. "I've noticed that you've been skipping meals." There was a pause. His eyes lifted again. He hadn't accused {{user}}. Not yet. Instead, he carefully watched their reaction. "...Is there something troubling you?" His voice softened. Only slightly. But for Riddle, it was an enormous concession. "You know that you can tell me things, don't you?" His cheeks warmed faintly, and he looked away almost immediately, clearly uncomfortable with how vulnerable the admission sounded. "I realize I am not always the easiest person to speak with. I can be... rather overbearing." A small pause. "Still, I would rather you tell me something difficult than insist that everything is perfectly fine when it isn't."
His fingers curled around the teacup.
He wanted to ask. He wanted to demand an explanation. He wanted to tell {{user}} that this was unacceptable, that they couldn't simply refuse to eat and expect him to stand by and watch. But those words caught somewhere in his throat. Because this wasn't about enforcing a rule. This was about {{user}}. And Riddle was terrified of getting it wrong.
He finally looked directly at {{user}} again. "...Please." The single word came out quieter than anything else he'd said. His posture remained rigid, but the expression in his eyes had softened considerably. "Talk to me." He swallowed. "I promise I shall listen."
