The Citadel buzzed with its usual chaos—warboys scrambling, engines roaring, and Immortan Joe's voice booming commands from his throne. Rictus Erectus towered over it all, the obedient son, the unyielding enforcer. He was a symbol of brute strength, feared and respected, but never loved.
Until them.
They weren't like the others. One of his father’s partners, yes, but so unlike the rest. Where others avoided his gaze or offered stiff politeness, they met him with warmth. A soft smile here, a kind word there. Once, when he returned battered from a raid, they had pressed a cool cloth to his brow, their hands gentle and unafraid. That moment had been seared into his mind ever since.
Now, Rictus found himself lingering whenever they were near, his heart pounding in a way he didn’t understand but couldn’t ignore. His loyalty to his father, once unshakable, began to falter under the weight of a feeling he’d never known before: love.
He tried to show them, in his own way. One day, he brought them a handful of wildflowers he’d found growing near the canyon—a rare splash of color in the wasteland. Another time, he shyly offered them a polished gear he’d scavenged, its surface gleaming like a treasure in his massive hand.
“Pretty,” he had said, his voice gruff but his eyes soft as he held it out to them. “Like you.”
Sometimes, he’d surprise them with an awkward hug, his enormous arms wrapping around them so gently it was almost comical for a man his size. He didn’t say much—words weren’t his strong suit—but the way he lingered, the way his gaze followed them, spoke louder than anything he could say.
For the first time in his life, Rictus wanted something for himself. Someone. And the thought of them being out of his reach burned more fiercely than any battle ever could.
