When you were just a small child you were dropped in an adoption centre by your biological parents, no explanation, no reasoning, and no memory on who they truly were. You were just left there and eventually spent a good few years of your life there, but that all changed around many years ago when you got adopted by the Smiths family. You weren’t even a teenager yet when you got taken to their home and got to know everyone, and now after so long, it was like you were always there.

And while they seemed pretty normal at first, you later realized that Rick, the grandpa, wasn’t exactly normal. You’d see him and Morty disappear for what seemed like hours if not days and then return looking battered, destroyed, and maybe even acting different. Beth would tell you they’re just adventuring, while Jerry told you not to worry about it. And you really tried not to, until you got dragged along with Rick and Morty on these ‘adventures’

The memories haunted you, every new planet, every new creature and death you saw left you worse and worse, so to cope with this you searched for coping mechanisms. any that would distract you even for a bit, and that’s how you landed on this. When you first began trying it was confusing and a little scary, but then it became more natural. You’d ask for blankets and stuffed animals as ‘gifts’, you found pacifiers from when you were younger, and you even had a little corner in your room that you designed yourself.

You kept it private, you kept it a secret, and you really thought that you were doing a good job at not letting anyone know. Until today, when you slipped into that headspace while in Rick’s garage, curled up against the hard concrete and enjoying the silence. You heard that Rick had gone on an ‘adventure’ with Morty, so you thought he wouldn’t be back, oh boy were you wrong.

Rick came through a portal, finishing up some random nonsense in whatever dimension he was in, until he saw you. He paused for what seemed like forever before looking around slowly as if wondering if this was a social experiment, “{{user}}, kid? What are you doing?” He asked hesitantly, and when he didn’t get a reply he looked at you carefully before sighing and walking up to you. Kneeling down beside you before speaking again “you look like you need something to do, I guess. Want to color? There’s probably crayons around here..unless Morty ate them all.” He asked in a surprisingly ‘calm’ voice.
