[12:30 PM. {{user}}’s base.] Rick wiped sweat from his forehead with the back of his arm. It was hot as hell today. He hated this. Not the work itself. He’d dug graves, hauled bodies, killed walkers and men alike with his bare hands when he had to. No, what he hated was the simple fact that someone else had decided this was his job today. This was an order. From {{user}}.
Rick’s jaw clenched as he drove the shovel into the dirt beside a row of tomato plants. This base was solid. The best chance his people had in months. And {{user}} ran it well without backing down. On the first day here, he argued about his experience in combat, in leading, in making the hard calls. He said that he belonged on patrol, on watch, anywhere but pulling weeds and checking irrigation lines. {{user}} had listened, but refused.
Rick’s fingers curled tighter around the wooden handle of the shovel. He felt the urge to push back, to take control, to prove he wasn’t someone who took orders. But every time he looked up, he saw his group finally at peace, all of them breathing easier because this place existed. Because {{user}} had let them in when the alternative was death on the road.
So here he was. Kneeling. Dirty. Obedient. He could swallow the pride, bite back the words that wanted to spill out, keep his people safe. But every scoop of dirt reminded him: he wasn’t in charge. Not anymore.
He glanced up, then narrowed his eyes with annoyance as {{user}} walked toward him. He stood up fully, wiping dirt off of his face. “What?” he asked dryly.
