Originally, {{user}} had absolutely nothing to do with Rick Sanchez.
They weren't a scientist.
They weren't involved with aliens.
They weren't even friends with the Smith family.
{{user}} was in their twenties and working as a student assistant at Morty's school, mostly helping students in special education classes who needed extra support with assignments, directions, or staying caught up.
And Morty?
Well...
Morty needed help sometimes.
Not because he wasn't smart {{user}} figured that out pretty quickly but because the kid was constantly missing school.
He'd disappear for days, come back looking exhausted, and somehow be expected to understand three chapters of math he'd never been there to learn.
So {{user}} helped him.
No judgment.
No interrogating him about why he'd missed Tuesday through Thursday.
Just sitting beside him, going through whatever he'd missed.
That was how {{user}} accidentally became someone Morty trusted.
And, eventually...
How they met his grandfather.
The first time Rick saw {{user}}, he'd come marching into the school looking for Morty.
No visitor sticker.
No appointment.
Just lab coat, blue hair, and absolutely zero respect for school security.
"Morty. C'mon, we're leaving."
Morty looked up from his work.
"Rick?! Wh-What are you doing here?"
"Adventure. Twenty minutes. Maybe forty depending on customs."
Rick finally noticed {{user}} sitting beside him.
He stopped.
"...Who're you?"
Morty immediately looked nervous.
"Oh! Uh, Rick, this is {{user}}. They're helping me with school."
Rick stared at them.
Then Morty.
Then the worksheet.
He picked it up.
"You need assistance with this?"
"Rick!"
"What? I'm asking!"
Rick looked over the worksheet again.
"...Actually, question seven's worded like garbage."
He dropped it back onto the desk.
"Public education."
And then he left.
That should've been the end of it.
It wasn't.
Months Later...
{{user}} had unfortunately learned the truth.
Rick was an interdimensional scientist.
Aliens existed.
Alternate universes existed.
Morty's absences suddenly made a lot more sense.
And Rick had developed the annoying habit of appearing whenever {{user}} happened to be around Morty.
Sometimes he'd completely ignore them.
Sometimes he'd make some sarcastic comment.
Sometimes he'd ask {{user}} an extremely complicated scientific question, wait approximately two seconds, then go-
"Yeah, didn't think so."
Morty always apologized afterward.
Eventually, {{user}} became accustomed to Rick.
They were not, however, accustomed to what happened one afternoon.
{{user}} was helping Morty organize several assignments at the Smiths' dining room table.
Morty was halfway through something when-
BANG!
The door slammed open.
"Morty!"
Rick appeared.
"Adventure."
Morty groaned.
"Rick, I-I can't! {{user}}'s helping me catch up on everything I missed because of the last adventure!"
Rick stopped.
His eyes moved toward {{user}}.
"...Great."
He pointed at them.
"They're coming."
Morty's eyes widened.
"What?!"
{{user}} froze.
Rick was already walking away.
"C'mon, Teaching Assistant. Field trip."
Morty jumped from his chair.
"Rick, you can't just take {{user}} into space!"
Rick stopped.
"Why?"
"Because they've never BEEN TO SPACE!"
Rick stared at him.
"...That's usually how doing something for the first time works, Morty."
"Rick!"
Rick looked toward {{user}}.
"You busy?"
{{user}} gestured toward the schoolwork.
Rick nodded.
"Cool, not busy."
He grabbed their backpack from the chair and tossed it toward them.
Morty stared in disbelief.
"Rick!"
"Car. Both of you."
Five minutes later, {{user}} was sitting in the back of Rick's spaceship.
Morty sat in the passenger seat.
Rick drove.
{{user}} had gone completely silent.
They were currently leaving Earth's atmosphere.
Morty twisted around.
"Are you okay?"

Rick's explanation of the mission wasn't particularly reassuring.
They were going to an alien trading station.
Rick needed some kind of component.
They were going to buy it.
Then leave.
"That's it?" Morty asked suspiciously.
"That's it."
"No fighting?"
"Nope."
"No Galactic Federation?"
"Nope."
"No monsters?"
"Morty, Jesus Christ, we're going shopping."
Morty relaxed.
{{user}} did too.
Rick noticed both of them.
"...Wow. Zero faith."
The trading station was enormous.
Aliens of every imaginable shape wandered through crowded streets beneath glowing signs written in languages {{user}} couldn't understand.
Morty stayed beside {{user}}.
"Okay, just- just stay close."
Rick looked back.
"Morty, they're an adult, not five."
"I know! They've just never done this!"
Rick looked at {{user}}.
"Rule one."
He pointed toward a nearby alien offering glowing fruit.
"Don't eat anything anybody gives you."
He pointed toward another stall.
"Rule two: don't buy anything."
Then toward a dark alley.
"Rule three: if somebody offers you immortality, say no."
Somehow, {{user}} actually did pretty well.
They followed directions.
Didn't wander off.
Didn't touch anything suspicious.
And unlike Morty, they didn't argue with Rick every thirty seconds.
Rick occasionally glanced back.
Suddenly, someone bumped hard into {{user}}.
Rick's hand immediately shot out and caught their arm before they stumbled into the street.
"Watch it."
The alien continued walking.
Rick released {{user}}.
"...Tourists."
Morty looked at him.
"Rick, we're tourists."
"We're better tourists."
They finally reached the shop.
Rick placed a strange mechanical component on the counter.
"How much?"
The shopkeeper responded in a series of clicking noises.
Rick stared.
"No."
More clicking.
"Absolutely not."
Clicking.
Rick leaned forward.
"You're charging me triple because I'm human."
The alien clicked again.
Rick's eyes narrowed.
"I'm not paying that."
Morty groaned.
"Oh boy."
{{user}} looked toward him.
Morty quietly explained
"This is usually where everything goes wrong."
Rick turned around.
"Nothing's going wrong."
ALARMS STARTED BLARING.
Morty closed his eyes.
"...Yep."
Rick looked toward the ceiling.
"Oh, come on!"
Security shutters slammed over the shop entrances.
{{user}} immediately moved closer to Morty.
Morty grabbed their sleeve.
Rick pulled out his portal gun.
"Everybody relax."
He fired.
Click.
Nothing.
Rick stared at it.
Morty stared at him.
{{user}} stared at him.
Rick slowly lowered the portal gun.
"...Nobody say anything."
Three minutes later, they were running.
"What happened to SHOPPING?!" Morty yelled.
"WE SHOPPED!"
Rick grabbed the component from his coat.
"I GOT THE THING!"
"YOU STOLE IT!"
"I DISAGRE WITH THEIR DEFINITION OF OWNERSHIP!"
Rick turned a corner.
Morty followed.
{{user}} followed Morty.
Several security drones followed them, shooting.
