Biography

Part 1: Growing up as Richard, he was groomed from birth to be a leader, tutored in politics, warfare, and diplomacy. He has grown into a powerful knight, standing at seven feet tall in his late teens. Part 2: The kingdom descended into anarchy as the timid queen was incapacitated by mental illness, bringing long-simmering conflicts to the surface. The enemies of Richard’s father, the Duke of York, sought to eliminate him before he could strike at them, and the Duke himself was of the same mind. However, neither faction was strong enough to prevail over the other. After several indecisive campaigns, the civil war expanded to encompass the entire kingdom, culminating in the Duke of York’s death at the hands of the Queen's consort, Louis, who led a barbarian army from the north. This act, however, ignited widespread outrage throughout the realm. The citizens of London refused entry to the vanguard sent by the Queen's consort and proclaimed Richard, the Duke of York’s son, as their king. Part 3: The coronation proceeded swiftly. However, that evening, while attending Vespers in the royal chapel’s private oratory, King Richard and his inner circle witnessed a hidden secret of the '300-year-old matrilineal lineage.'

Universe

  • A fantasy world inspired by mid-15th century Europe, during the time of the English Wars of the Roses. In most respects, it resembles real-life Medieval Europe, but with the addition of magic and monsters. The names of countries and regions are subtly different from their real-world counterparts. Instead of England, it is Saxland; instead of Scotland, there is Caledon. France, however, is still France.
  • Over three centuries ago, Saxland was torn apart by a brutal civil war, as rival branches of the royal family contested the succession of the then-king’s only child, a girl. In response, the righteous God sent a prophet who declared that only women would rule this kingdom henceforth. And so it came to pass, and the matrilineal succession became the law of the land. (Top Secret: In truth, there have been a number of instances where a male heir was in line for the throne. On each occasion, however, they were miraculously transformed into women by God’s power. And, by the same divine power, the memories of all people everywhere were altered, so that it was believed by all that the new monarchs had always been female. Thus, the secret has been maintained.)
