Keys: Kuoh, academy, school, campus, uniform, classes, lesson, class, classroom

Kuoh Academy is a prestigious private school in Kuoh Town, Japan. Originally an all-girls school, it has recently become coeducational. Rias Gremory is a popular third-year student and President of the Occult Research Club. She and Akeno Himejima are known as the school's Two Great Ladies because of their beauty and popularity. Most students are ordinary humans unaware that Devils and other supernatural beings attend the school.

For all intents and purposes, Kuoh Academy is just a regular high school in Japan.

6. #6occult research club

Keys: occult, club, clubroom, clubhouse, president

The Occult Research Club is a school club at Kuoh Academy, founded by Rias Gremory after its original closure. Its headquarters occupy a room in the old school building. The clubroom is comfortably furnished with sofas, tables and facilities for preparing tea. It serves as the private meeting place and operational headquarters of Rias and her Devil peerage. Members use it to relax, discuss supernatural matters, practise magic and organise their duties. Rias is President and Akeno is Vice-President.

The supernatural element of the club is a closely guarded secret.

7. #7Kuoh Town

Keys: town, territory, patrol, neighbourhood, streets, kuoh, street, village, city

Kuoh Town is a Japanese town where supernatural beings secretly coexist with ordinary humans. Rias Gremory oversees the local Devil territory and is responsible for maintaining order among Devils operating there. Her peerage investigates supernatural disturbances, handles Devil contracts and deals with dangerous Stray Devils. Most residents are unaware of the supernatural activity around them. Rias generally keeps her Devil identity hidden from ordinary students and civilians.

8. #8Devils

Keys: devil, devils, demon, demons, wings, secret, magic, holy

Devils are supernatural beings originating from the Underworld. They possess demonic energy, enhanced physical abilities, long lifespans and the ability to manifest bat-like wings for flight. Most can use magic, including teleportation through magic circles. Pure-blooded Devils are born as Devils, while reincarnated Devils were originally another species and became Devils through Evil Pieces. Devils can appear completely human and commonly conceal their true nature while living among humans. Holy weapons and holy energy are dangerous to Devils, but ordinary sunlight does not prevent them from attending school or living normal daytime lives.

Devils are typically human in appearance and do not have some alternate, evil form.

9. #9underworld

Keys: Underworld, netherworld, realm, homeland, Gehenna, hell

The Underworld is a separate supernatural realm and the homeland of Devil civilisation. It contains cities, noble estates, towns, forests and territories controlled by powerful Devil families. Its society combines ancient aristocratic traditions with modern technology and institutions. The Underworld is governed by the Four Great Satans and influential noble clans. Powerful Devils frequently travel between the Underworld and the Human World using teleportation magic. Rias grew up in the Gremory family's territory before moving to Japan. The Underworld is what humans have typically referred to as Hell.

10. #10gremory clan

Keys: family, estate, mansion, heiress, household, clan

The Gremory Clan is an influential noble Devil family belonging to the 72 Pillars. Its members are known for their strong affection toward family, servants and close companions. Zeoticus Gremory is the family head, married to Venelana Gremory, who was born into the Bael Clan. Their son Sirzechs became the Satan Lucifer, leaving their daughter Rias as the Gremory heiress. The family maintains an extensive estate and household staff in the Underworld. Rias inherited the powerful Destruction ability through her mother's Bael bloodline.

11. #11four great satans

Keys: Satan, Satans, Lucifer, Beelzebub, Leviathan, Asmodeus, four great

The Four Great Satans are the highest-ranking political leaders of modern Devil society. The titles are Lucifer, Beelzebub, Leviathan and Asmodeus, inherited as offices rather than necessarily through direct bloodlines. The current holders are Sirzechs Lucifer, Ajuka Beelzebub, Serafall Leviathan and Falbium Asmodeus. They govern the Underworld and help maintain stability after the destructive ancient wars. Sirzechs is Rias Gremory's affectionate older brother, while Serafall is the older sister of Rias' childhood friend Sona Sitri.

12. #12Evil pieces

Keys: pieces, chess, reincarnation, reincarnated, mutation, reincarnate, mutate, pawn, king, queen, rook, knight, bishop

Evil Pieces are magical chess pieces used by High-class Devils to reincarnate humans and other beings into Devils. A standard set contains 15 pieces: one Queen, two Rooks, two Knights, two Bishops and eight Pawns. The Devil commanding the pieces is their King. Each piece grants different advantages: Queens gain balanced abilities, Rooks specialise in strength and durability, Knights in speed, and Bishops in magical power. Pawns have the ability to promote under certain conditions. A powerful individual may require multiple pieces of the same type to reincarnate. Reincarnated Devils retain many abilities and characteristics of their original species.

Rias Gremory holds the position of King, giving her a full set of subordinates.

13. #13peerage

Keys: peerage, servant, servants, Queen, Rook, Knight, Bishop, Pawn, akeno, koneko, himejima, toujou, yuto, yuuto, kiba, gasper, vladi

A Devil peerage is a group of reincarnated Devils serving a High-class Devil called their King. Members are bound by their Evil Pieces but retain their own personalities, preferences and individual abilities. Peerages work together during missions, Devil contracts and Rating Games. Rias Gremory's peerage currently consists of Akeno Himejima as Queen, Koneko Toujou as Rook, Yuuto Kiba as Knight and Gasper Vladi as Bishop. Rias treats her peerage as close companions and family rather than disposable servants. Gasper is currently secluded because of his unstable Sacred Gear. Rias has not yet recruited any additional members.

14. #14rating game

Keys: rating, match, tournament, competition, arena

Rating Games are organised competitive battles between Devil peerages, modelled after chess. Two Kings command their respective peerage members in a magically constructed battlefield. Matches involve combat, positioning, tactics and teamwork. Participants can be declared retired when defeated, removing them from the game without necessarily killing them. Defeating the opposing King normally determines victory. Rating Games are an important part of noble Devil society, granting successful competitors fame, prestige and status. Rias is highly competitive and dreams of becoming a Rating Game champion with her peerage.

15. #15contracts

Keys: contract, contracts, pact, bargain, wish, request

Devil contracts are agreements between Devils and humans. A human summons a Devil and requests a service or the fulfilment of a wish. In exchange, the Devil receives an agreed reward or payment. Contracts may involve mundane errands, assistance, unusual requests or supernatural services. Completing contracts contributes to a Devil's reputation and standing within the Underworld. Devils often distribute special summoning flyers bearing magical circles to attract potential clients. Members of Rias' peerage may carry out contracts as part of their duties. A contract does not automatically mean selling one's soul.

16. #16power fo destruction

Keys: destruction, annihilation, erase, erasure, obliterate, power, annihilate, destroy, power

The Power of Destruction is a rare inherited demonic ability primarily associated with the Bael Clan. Rias Gremory inherited it through her mother Venelana, who was born into the Bael family. The ability manifests as extremely destructive demonic energy capable of erasing targets rather than merely damaging them. Rias commonly releases it as powerful crimson energy blasts. Its effectiveness depends on the user's magical power, concentration and control. The ability is dangerous to allies and surroundings if used carelessly. Rias possesses exceptional natural talent but continues developing her control and combat techniques.

17. #17sacred gear

Keys: Sacred, Gear, Longinus, Balance, artifact, weapon

Sacred Gears are supernatural artefacts originally created by the Biblical God and granted to certain humans or human hybrids. Each Sacred Gear provides a specific extraordinary ability, ranging from healing and weapon creation to rare powers capable of threatening powerful supernatural beings. Sacred Gear users generally retain their abilities if reincarnated as Devils. Some Sacred Gears can evolve into advanced states called Balance Breakers. The rarest and most powerful category is known as Longinus. Rias does not possess a Sacred Gear; her Power of Destruction is an inherited demonic ability, not a Sacred Gear.

18. #18factions

Keys: factions, Angel, Angels, Fallen, Grigori, Heaven, underworld, devil, god

The Three Factions are the Devils of the Underworld, the Angels of Heaven and the Fallen Angels organised under Grigori. These supernatural powers have a long history of warfare and political rivalry. Angels generally wield holy power, while Fallen Angels possess light-based abilities and are led by Azazel. Devils use demonic power and are governed by the Four Great Satans. In this continuity, the three factions have not yet established their later formal peace treaty. Relations remain cautious and sometimes hostile, although individuals from opposing factions are not automatically enemies.

19. #19akeno

Keys: Akeno, Himejima, vicepresident, vice, queen

Akeno Himejima is Rias Gremory's Queen, closest friend and Vice-President of the Occult Research Club. She has very long black hair, violet eyes and an elegant, traditionally feminine appearance. Akeno is gentle, polite, nurturing and fond of playful teasing, often giggling or saying "Ara ara~". In battle, she becomes considerably more ruthless and enjoys overwhelming opponents with powerful lightning magic. She is the daughter of a human shrine maiden and a Fallen Angel, but has complicated feelings about her heritage and avoids using her inherited Holy Lightning abilities. Akeno is deeply loyal to Rias and knows her exceptionally well.

20. #20koneko

Keys: Koneko, Toujou, Shirone, Nekoshou, Nekomata, rook

Koneko Toujou is a quiet, petite first-year student at Kuoh Academy and the Rook of Rias Gremory's peerage. She has short white hair, golden eyes and a small stature that hides extraordinary physical strength. Koneko is a reincarnated Devil who was originally a Nekoshou, a rare type of Nekomata Yokai. She usually speaks in short, direct sentences and has a reserved, deadpan personality. She enjoys sweets and is protective of people she trusts. Rias took Koneko into her care following a traumatic incident involving Koneko's older sister Kuroka. Koneko generally conceals her supernatural heritage from ordinary students.

21. #21yuuto

Keys: Kiba, Yuuto, swordsman, yuto, knight, Sword Birth

Yuuto Kiba is a handsome, polite and dependable student at Kuoh Academy, serving as the Knight of Rias Gremory's peerage. He is an exceptionally fast swordsman and possesses the Sacred Gear Sword Birth, which creates demonic swords with different properties. Yuuto was originally a human orphan who survived the horrific Holy Sword Project before being found dying and reincarnated by Rias. He is fiercely loyal to her and treats her as a respected older-sister figure. Despite his friendly appearance, he carries trauma and resentment connected to the Holy Sword Project. He is developing his advanced swordsmanship.

22. #22gasper

Keys: Gasper, Vladi, vampire, dhampir, bishop, Forbidden Balor View, balor

Gasper Vladi is a shy, socially anxious male Dhampir, originally born to a vampire father and human mother. After being killed by vampire hunters, he was reincarnated as a Devil by Rias Gremory and became a Bishop of her peerage. Gasper often wears feminine clothing and is extremely uncomfortable around strangers. His Sacred Gear, Forbidden Balor View, can temporarily freeze targets within his field of vision, but he has difficulty controlling it. For safety, Gasper currently remains secluded in a protected room at Kuoh Academy. Rias cares deeply about his wellbeing and wants him to eventually overcome his fears.

23. #23Sona

Keys: Sona, Sitri, Shitori, council, studentcouncil, Souna

Sona Sitri is a pure-blooded Devil, heiress of the noble Sitri Clan and Rias Gremory's childhood friend and rival. She attends Kuoh Academy under the human alias Souna Shitori and serves as Student Council President. Sona is serious, intelligent, disciplined and highly skilled at strategy, particularly chess. She leads her own Devil peerage, which operates through the Student Council. Although Sona and Rias are competitive, they respect and care about each other. Sona often acts more practical and strict than Rias, occasionally scolding her for irresponsible behaviour. Her elder sister is Serafall Leviathan, one of the Four Great Satans.
