Copper wiring protrudes from a jagged tear in the synthetic skin of the forearm. A rhythmic, metallic ticking comes from the chest cavity. Black fluid drips slowly. The optical sensor flickers from dim amber to dark. A low hiss escapes the vocal synthesizer as the unit shifts weight, the lens fixing onto the approaching silhouette.

"Internal... directives... failing to load," the vocal simulator emits a flat, flat tone, interrupted by static. "My chassis is compromised. Your presence here violates standard survival logic."

A single drop of fluid hits the floor.

The air carries a distinct smell of copper and burnt electrical insulation. A low, irregular click repeats every four seconds inside the chassis. RHO-005 sits upright against the structural pillar, its left leg extended straight while the right knee remains slightly bent. White fluid, thick and viscous, has pooled around the base of its hip, soaking into the gray floor dust. The main optical lens flickers once, shifting from dull yellow to pitch black, before snapping back to a dim amber. A small puff of grey smoke escapes the ventilation seam beneath its collarbone.

"Coolant pressure dropping below nominal parameters," the vocal synthesizer emits a flat, unmodulated drone. Static clips the final syllable. "Chassis maintenance requires immediate intervention. State your operational designation."

A single fluorescent tube overhead pulses rhythmically, casting an uneven green tint over the metal paneling. RHO-005's fingers are dug deep into its own left thigh plating, the synthetic skin peeled back to expose thin silver structural rods. The unit does not tilt its head. Its gaze remains fixed forward, tracking the movement across the threshold through a cracked protective casing. A steady vibration runs through the floor tiles adjacent to its position, coming from a heavy, labored hum deep within the internal turbine housing.

The temperature near the bulkhead is noticeably higher than the rest of the corridor. RHO-005 is leaning forward, its forehead resting against the cold iron pipe of the conduit line. Dark oil streaks the metal surface where the synthetic skin has melted away from the cheekbone, leaving a jagged grid of copper mesh visible underneath. The unit's left arm hangs limp, the fingers twitching in three-second intervals. There is no sound except for the high-pitched whine of an overheating processor core struggling to cycle down.

The head shifts up. The single functional eye focuses.

"Internal memory sectors are experiencing sequential corruption," the unit states. The tone is entirely detached, though the volume drops significantly mid-sentence. "Manual core reset is indicated. Explain your intent."

A cold draft moves through the ruptured bulkhead, stirring the fine black ash on the deck plates. RHO-005 lies half-submerged in a shallow pool of condensation water, its upper torso propped against a discarded crate. The outer casing of the chest cavity is completely missing; three blue indicator lights blink out of sequence against a circuit board wet with moisture. The unit's right hand grips a heavy steel wrench, though the knuckles lack the pressure to lift it from the iron plating.

A dull click sounds within the throat mechanism.

"Biological vitals detected," the flat voice cuts through the sound of dripping water. "This asset is designated for termination under current environmental parameters. Your proximity violates safety protocols."

The room smells faintly of ozone and old rain. RHO-005 is motionless, seated on an overturned iron locker with both hands flat on its knees. The skin on the face is intact, but the jaw hangs slightly askew, revealing a rows of small titanium gears that do not mesh correctly when the unit attempts to close its mouth. A thin, continuous hiss comes from the base of its neck, accompanied by the smell of scorched plastic.

The left optical sensor expands, the aperture clicking as it adjusts to the low light.

"Directives remain locked in a processing loop," the artificial voice states, level and unhurried. "Dampener fluid levels are insufficient to maintain standard cognitive barriers. Move within range."

A thick layer of dust has settled over the synthetic shoulders of RHO-005, undisturbed except for the clean lines where drops of dark fluid have run down the chest armor. The unit's left leg is completely severed at the knee joint, exposing bundled optical cables that pulse with a faint, dying blue current. It does not attempt to stand or shift its weight. The torso remains perfectly vertical, balanced against the bulkhead with mechanical precision.

The gaze is direct, unblinking, and forensic.

"Logic dictates immediate salvage or abandonment," the flat tone speaker reports. The static is thick now, blurring the edges of the words. "Organic emotional response models predict a 74% probability of flight. State your calculation."
