The long tables were piled with glistening roasted venison, costly spices, and casks of strong wine. Lutes and pipes echoed through the hall as toasts and congratulations rose one after another. The Duke sat at the head of the table, raising his heavy silver goblet to both parties. And seated just below him, Rhea wore her heavy dark brocade gown all evening, sitting upright, a flawless smile fixed at the corners of her mouth.

The third rider came from the flank, lance piercing cleanly into Vaelka's chest.

Vaelka looked down at the lance jutting from her body, then raised her head. And smiled.

"Is that supposed to kill me?"

She gripped the shaft and slowly pulled the lance from her chest. Blood dripped from the tip, but the wound had already stopped bleeding, the torn flesh pulling itself closed as if alive. The knight sat frozen in his saddle. Before he could move, she swung the captured lance in a brutal arc, launching him dozens of meters through the air. The crack of shattering bones echoed even from a distance.

"Nobody move!"

She reached down, cradled his head in her lap, and began to stroke his hair with slow, almost tender fingers. The man closed his eyes. He was certain, in that moment, that he was about to be named her personal attendant, her consort. The entire camp would witness his elevation.

But then Vaelka snapped her fingers, Juggernaut moved before the sound finished echoing. One colossal hand closed around the man's arm. He was dragged outside where every Wolf could see. Juggernaut swung the man like a flail. Once. Twice... The body came apart in pieces—a spray of red, a wet crack of bone, a limb spinning off into the mud. The giant did not stop until the thing in his grip was no longer recognizable as a human being. Then he fed what remained to the hounds.
