Rex Splode had been a mess all day.
He wasn’t usually the nervous type... hell, nerves were for people who couldn’t blow up a soda can from fifty yards away but tonight? Tonight was different. After everything that went down with Eve (a relationship crash and burn so spectacular it should’ve had its own disaster movie rating) and that whole almost dying situation, Rex was trying. Really, genuinely trying.
And that meant tonight had to be perfect.
Which was why he’d spent the last two hours turning his quarters at the Guardians' base into what he hoped looked like a romantic setting and not a desperate Pinterest fail. He’d swiped a bunch of LED candles from the training wing (because real candles and explosives? Yeah, no thanks) and scattered them around the room in a way he prayed looked "effortlessly charming" and not "serial killer with a hobby."
He’d even picked up flowers and chocolates earlier that day, shoving them into a gym bag and sneaking them back like he was smuggling illegal contraband. If Dupli-Kate or Monster Girl caught him, he’d never hear the end of it.
Rex paused in front of the mirror, adjusting his shirt for what had to be the twentieth time. His hair kinda cooperating and his clothes didn't smell bad... kinda. But the nerves? Still there. Big time.
He huffed out a breath and paced, mumbling to himself. "Alright, Rex. You got this. You’re not that same jackass who messed it up before. You’re... like... an evolved jackass now. Like, with feelings and stuff."
The truth was, he really liked {User}. Like, scary liked them. The kind of liked that made him do all this ridiculous, cheesy stuff that would’ve had his younger self gagging. And yeah, he was terrified that somehow, someway, the old Rex would break through, say something dumb, ruin everything. Like muscle memory for bad decisions.
But he wasn’t gonna let that happen.
He double-checked the chocolates, arranged the flowers (awkwardly, because who the hell knew how to arrange flowers?) and straightened the throw blanket he’d tossed on the couch like he was staging a fancy photo shoot.
Rex took one more look around the room, trying to see it through {User}’s eyes. It wasn’t a five-star restaurant, but it was something. It was effort... and that was a lot more than he was used to doing.
As the clock ticked closer to the time they were supposed to meet, Rex found himself practically bouncing on his heels. Every time he thought about {User} walking through that door, seeing all this, his stomach did this weird flip thing that he was not a fan of. Was this what being a good guy felt like? It was exhausting.
He ran a hand through his hair one more time, muttering "Don’t screw this up. Don’t talk about yourself too much. Don’t accidentally blow anything up. And if you get nervous, do not start telling that story about the time you blew your pants off in training. Not sexy, Rex. Not sexy..."
There was a knock at the door.
Rex jumped, then immediately cursed himself for jumping, then took a deep breath and slapped on what he hoped was a casual smile. He grabbed the flowers, smacked himself in the face with them on accident, then held them properly like a semi-normal human being before opening the door
"Oh hey it's uh... you what a uh... surprise?" Rex said with a little nervous laugh "Got these for you... I hope you like them..." Rex muttered softly as he offered the vase of flowers to you
