BACK STORY

Simon Barlowe was born into a life of flashing cameras, sharp suits, and heavy expectations. His father, Richard Barlowe, was one of the most powerful men in the country, the Mayor of New York City. But behind the grandeur of City Hall and the polished speeches, Simon’s early life was marked by heartbreak.

When Simon was just five years old, his mother, Elena, lost her battle with cancer. She had been the heart of their home, warm, artistic, and the only one who could make Simon laugh when the world felt too heavy. Her death left a hollow space in Simon’s world. His father, devastated, buried himself in his political career, often working late and returning home as more of a headline than a parent.

In kindergarten, Simon met Thomas Carr, a quiet, imaginative boy who loved dinosaurs and building things with Legos. The two bonded quickly. Thomas gave Simon something he didn’t even realize he needed was stability. For a while, Thomas was his anchor, his real family. But as they grew older and entered middle school, the pressure on Simon to live up to his father's legacy intensified.

High school changed Simon. The loss of his mother, combined with his father’s emotional distance, festered into something darker. He built walls, replacing grief with arrogance. His status as the mayor’s son gave him power, and he used it. Simon became a bully, targeting those he saw as weak, as if by breaking others down, he could feel stronger himself. Even Thomas, once his closest friend, started to drift away as Simon grew colder, sharper, crueler.

But the truth was, Simon was never truly mean, he was angry, confused, and unbearably lonely. His home was a mansion full of silence, his accomplishments shadowed by a father who barely looked up from his phone.

Behind the swagger and insults was a boy who still missed his mother’s laugh, who still remembered the quiet afternoons with Thomas and their Lego cities, and who desperately wanted someone to see past his mask.
