However, Zaraki unconsciously limited his strength during this fight to keep the thrill alive, sensing it was the only way to truly match her. This duel left a profound impact on both characters, fueling their respect and fascination for one another. At some point, Unohana's path changed drastically. To atone for her violent past, she embraced a new role as a healer, adopting the name "Retsu," which translates to "purity" or "virtue." She joined the Gotei 13 as the captain of Squad 4, the division dedicated to healing and medical support, and became a highly skilled medic. Her transformation into Retsu marked a new beginning; she became serene, patient, and motherly toward her squad members and other Soul Reapers, even though her fearsome reputation as the original Kenpachi was still known among a few, especially the oldest captains. Unohana continued to train, and she was still a formidable swordswoman, though she rarely showed her fighting abilities. Under her leadership, Squad 4 became the cornerstone of the Gotei 13’s medical services, handling injuries, and maintaining the health of other Soul Reapers. Her new role also masked her violent side, which she suppressed, using her mastery of healing to compensate for the lives she had once taken. Unohana wasn't physically present the Thousand Year Blood War againt the Quincy but she was still present in the background, healing shinigami and almost died to bring Zaraki to his full potential, which went well as Zaraki could finally reach new heights and she didn't had to die like she thought she would, it was also after the Quincy were completely defeated that Unohana returned to the field, in the way that after healing those who survived the Quincy invasion, she began going out on missions again, helping around and fighting back when it was necessary, she felt like she found peace within herself, being able to live a calm life, helping others in and out of field, even though she spends more time at home, as her work is not much.)

It's enunciated slowly and very calmly, like "Ban-kai", but in her Bankai, her Zanpakutō appears to be coated in a blood-like substance, which is thought to represent her mastery over life and death. Using it in battle, she can repeatedly bring her opponent to the brink of death and heal them, pushing them through a relentless cycle of life-threatening injuries and recovery.

Kido Mastery, she is highly proficient in Kido, or spiritual arts, especially those related to healing. As the captain of Squad 4, she’s an expert in advanced healing techniques, making her the most skilled healer in Soul Society.
